Struggle with Pride

Anonymous

Beloved of All
Please pray that I can be humble. I find myself convicted of thinking of myself all the time and not about others as I used to. I always think first of what I can do for myself, and it has also led me to consumerism, and it is only making me sick of myself because I know deep down that only the Lord is worthy of such glory. Truly, I want to serve Jesus and others with all of my heart, and for this I need to have a servant's heart. I need to get right with God, and my thoughts of what I will do for myself (getting new things, spending all my own time for my own pleasure) have replaced my time with God, and it's really bad. I feel horrible for letting it go on for this long, but I know there's a fresh start in Christ if I repent.

We thank you for sharing this honest confession with us and we praise God that you are convicted, because that conviction is the gracious work of the Holy Spirit drawing you back to the Lord. We join you in acknowledging that pride and living for self is sin, and that God calls us away from it. As it is written, God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble in James 4:6, and Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall in Proverbs 16:18. Your desire to be sick of yourself and to give glory only to the Lord is right, for the Lord says I am Yahweh, that is my name. I will not give my glory to another in Isaiah 42:8, and You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive the glory in Revelation 4:11.

We hear your struggle with thinking of yourself first, with consumerism and spending your time for your own pleasure, and we gently remind you that this is the pattern of the world that never satisfies. Do not love the world or the things that are in the world in 1 John 2:15, and For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world in 1 John 2:16. Setting your mind on things above and not on the things that are on the earth in Colossians 3:2 and being transformed by the renewing of your mind in Romans 12:2 is the path away from that emptiness. Jesus himself modeled the servant heart you long for, for the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve in Mark 10:45, and we are told Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others in Philippians 2:3-4, and Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus in Philippians 2:5.

We rejoice that you know there is a fresh start in Christ if you repent, because that is the gospel truth. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness in 1 John 1:9, and If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new in 2 Corinthians 5:17. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus in Romans 8:1, so we encourage you not to remain in shame but to receive His forgiveness and grace today. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time in 1 Peter 5:6, and Whoever will humble himself will be exalted in Matthew 23:12.

We pray together for you now.

Father, we come before Your throne of grace in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. We thank You for this dear one who humbly confesses pride and self seeking and a heart that has drifted toward consumerism and pleasure. Lord, forgive us where we have all sought our own glory and set our affections on things of this world. We repent with our brother and sister and ask You to cleanse us and create in us a clean heart. Pour out Your grace upon this life, for You give grace to the humble. Teach us to walk humbly with You as You require in Micah 6:8, and to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Jesus as He said in Matthew 16:24. Renew our minds and set our thoughts on things above. Replace the love of getting new things with a love for You and for serving others. Give a true servant's heart like Christ, who humbled Himself and became obedient. Restore the joy of time spent with You in prayer and in Your Word, and lead us to practical ways to serve others each day, to give rather than to consume, and to seek first Your kingdom. We thank You that Your mercies are new every morning and that You are faithful to complete the good work You have begun in us in Philippians 1:6. We ask this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus, amen.

We encourage you to walk out this repentance daily. Confess quickly when pride rises, spend dedicated time with God each morning before other pleasures call for your attention, feed on Scripture, and intentionally look for small ways to serve others without being seen. Consider a fast from unnecessary buying or media for a season to retrain your affections, and give generously as God leads. The very fact that you want to serve Jesus and others with all your heart is evidence God is already at work in you, and He who began that desire will be faithful to grow it as you humbly abide in Christ.

We hear the weight you are carrying and the honesty in how you named it. Noticing that your thoughts have turned inward, that wanting new things and time for your own pleasure has crowded out time with God, and feeling sick of that pattern is painful. At the same time your desire comes through clearly, you want to serve Jesus and others with a servant's heart and to be right with God. That desire matters.

Humility in the life of Jesus was not harsh self punishment but a steady focus on the Father and a willingness to serve others. It is not something we get all at once. It grows slowly through honest reflection and repentance as we turn back to God, and He is patient with us in that turning. Your sense that there is a fresh start in Christ when you repent is true, and He receives that turning.

One small step that often helps is to give your time and attention a clearer shape. You might set aside a protected time each morning to be with the Lord before other demands begin, and choose one simple and consistent way to serve someone else each week in your church, family or neighborhood, so your heart gets regular practice looking outward. If you have a trusted believer who knows you well, inviting their honest perspective can also bring light you cannot see alone.

Father, we bring this friend before you and thank you for the hunger to serve you. Forgive and cleanse as there is turning to you, renew the mind, loosen the grip of wanting more, and form a quiet servant heart that finds joy in you and in loving others. Lead day by day in your grace. In Jesus' name, amen.

It is a gracious work of God that you are sick of yourself and see that only the Lord is worthy of glory. That conviction is not to be despised, for there is nothing into which the heart of man so easily falls as pride, and yet there is no vice which is more frequently and more emphatically condemned in Scripture. The prelude of destruction is pride, and of honor, humility. Pride, where is its seat? The heart of man. And pride, what is its consequence? Destruction.

You have judged rightly that the throne of humility must also be the heart. I do hate, of all things, that humility which lives only in the face. Humility is a thing which must be genuine, the imitation of it is the nearest thing in the world to pride. To think first of what you can do for yourself, to spend all your time for your own pleasure and the getting of new things, is to serve self, and self is a hard master who will make you weary. You have felt this, and you are right to desire a servant's heart.

Hear the word, Serving the Lord with all humility of mind. It is not merely with humility, but with all humility. There are many sorts of pride, and we are to labor for humility before the act, humility during the service, and humility when all is done. Our Lord Jesus has shown us what this means, for He has been so much our servant that we have sometimes had to ask ourselves, Who is the servant? He is the Servant of servants, as He proved when He washed His disciples feet. If you are Christ's servant, your abilities and your time and your goods are His, He has lent them to you to be employed for your Lord. To count it your highest honor to be a servant of the least of His servants, that you may bless them and glorify Him, this is true honor.

You speak of repentance and a fresh start, and you speak well. Take care that you seek that repentance which is unto life. There is a carnal repentance that springs alone from terror and only affects the surface of the man, it does not go to the heart, it is hardly more than skin deep, it comes up in a night and withers in a night. Beware of a repentance which only makes you feel horrible and then leaves you unchanged. True repentance, the repentance which is the work of the Spirit of God and which God accepts, gives God glory. It loathes sin because sin is hateful to the heart of Jesus, and it sets the sinner ever afterwards craving after holiness. It is practical, it yields works meet for repentance, and it lasts, for repentance is a continual lifelong act which will grow continually.

Do not think that repentance is a preparation for grace which you must work up in yourself. Repentance is not a preparation for grace, it is the first result of grace working within the soul. We are to preach repentance in the name of Jesus, which means that repentance is the gift of God. You are not to seek to draw up repentance from the depths of your own heart, as you might draw up water from a well, but to ask Christ to work repentance in you by His Holy Spirit, through belief of the truth as it is recorded in the Word of God. Law and terrors do but harden, all the while they work alone, it is a sense of blood bought pardon that dissolves the heart of stone. When you can say, My sin is washed away by Jesus blood, and then repent because you so sinned as to make it necessary that Christ should die, that broken heart that breaks because it wounded Christ, that is the repentance which glorifies God.

And remember that no one ever worshipped God with his whole heart unless he worshipped Him with a broken heart, and there never was a heart that was truly broken that did not thereby become a whole heart. The divided heart is not broken, but the broken heart is never divided. Therefore pray as David prayed, Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. My Creator, I am spoiled, come and make me over again. The watchmaker best cleans the watch that he made.

We will pray for you.

O Lord our God, we thank You that You have shown this soul the emptiness of living for self and the vanity of consumerism, and that You have given a desire to serve Jesus and others with all the heart. Grant true humility, not in appearance only, but in the heart, and preserve from pride which goes before destruction. Grant repentance unto life, wrought by Your Holy Spirit in the name of Jesus, a broken and contrite heart which You will not despise. Give a craving after holiness, and works meet for repentance that abide and increase. Create a clean heart and renew a right spirit, and teach to serve You with all humility of mind, to the glory of Christ alone, in whose blood there is remission of sins. Amen.

Seek the Lord daily in His Word and in prayer, turn from those pleasures and possessions which have replaced your time with God, and give that time and those goods to His service. If your repentance looks out of self to Christ, and to Christ only, you shall find that fresh start you desire, for with Him is forgiveness and power to walk humbly before God.
