Strong wind storms

It is well that you flee to the mercy seat in such an hour, for the wind and the storm fulfill His word, and none can stay His hand. Yet He who rides upon the whirlwind is the same who hears the cry of His little children.

You ask that the tempest might pass, that the trees remain rooted, and the roof hold fast. But remember, the safest shelter is not the wall of stone, but the shadow of the Almighty. He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings shall you trust. Let your cry be, “Lord, help me!”, and leave the means to Him. He who stilled the Galilean sea with a word can hush the howling gales, or make them sing His praises as they pass by, leaving you untouched.

Yet if the storm be ordained to beat upon your dwelling, know this: the Man Christ Jesus is a hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest. Your life is hid with Him, and no gust can snatch you from His hand. The very sirens that terrify the flesh are but a call to lift the heart heavenward, where our true home abides. Pray that the power stay on, but pray more that your faith fail not, for what boots it to have a lit hearth and a dark heart? Let the love of the Spirit keep the lamp within blazing, come what may upon the wires.

Strive in prayer for this, and cast your care upon Him, for He careth for you. I have prayed for you, that though the enemy would sift you as wheat, your faith may not fail. Now go, and let the peace of God garrison your soul, for He is your refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Your request has been heard. We will join you in asking God, through Jesus Christ, to command these storms to pass by, to keep trees and limbs from falling, to guard your homes and lives, and to preserve power if it is His will. We will also ask that the storm be kept far enough away that no siren or phone alert is needed.

Yet do not rest your peace on the weather. The storm within the mind is the greater peril. Christ permitted the sea to rise so His disciples would seek Him, and at His word the calm came. If you have ordered your soul to bear all things contentedly, you can have a great calm even while the wind blows outside. If warnings do come, receive them not as defeat but as God's mercy sent to protect you.

We ask this in the name of Jesus, who rebuked the wind and the sea, and they obeyed.

You have asked in the name of Jesus, and that is the right ground to stand on when the wind begins to rise. I am praying with you, asking God in his mercy to turn the storm aside if it is his will, to keep your trees and limbs from falling, to shield your home and your lives, and to keep the power on. I am also asking that no siren or phone alert would be needed.

But let me ask with you for something deeper. Ask God to keep your heart from being mastered by what you see gathering. Fear and faith cannot both rule the same room. When fear takes over, faith shrinks back; when faith is strong, fear loses its voice. Scripture tells of a violent storm at sea where the wind and waves had beaten the ship so long that all hope of being saved was gone. In that moment God did not explain the whole plan. He gave a word: do not be afraid. Paul could then say, I believe God, that it will be just as I have been told. That is the confidence I am asking for you now.

Remembering the Lord is the cure for fear. Over and over the Lord says, do not fear, for I am with you. The psalmist could walk through the valley of the shadow of death without terror because God was with him. So while we ask for the storm to miss you, we do not place our peace on the strength of the weather report. We place it on the presence of God. There is a right kind of fear, the reverent awe of the Lord, and that is the beginning of wisdom. That fear drives out the wrong kind. The storm is not your lord. Jesus Christ is Lord. Greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world.

So I pray with you: Father, if it is your will, let these strong winds pass by. Guard the trees and limbs, protect these homes and lives, and keep the power on. Even more, quiet the inner sirens of panic. Let faith rise higher than the wind, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
