It is a good and right thing to bring your spouse before the throne of grace, for prayer is always good and always a blessed thing, and there is no dearer object for importunity with God than those who are nearest to us in life.
We will agonize with you in prayer to God for you, as the Apostle said, I beseech you, brethren, that you strive together with me in your prayers to God for me. It is not a prayer which foams itself away in words that is wanted, but prayer with force, with energy, with humble boldness, with intensity of desire, prayer which like a deep hidden torrent cuts a channel even through a rock. Such prayer we will offer with you and for you.
We commend to you that handy prayer which suits every case and every place, Lord, help me. It is the prayer of humility and of faith, plain in its speech as Jacob's was when he spread his case before the Lord. Bring your spouse before the Lord with plainness and humility, confessing your own need and your spouse's need, and pressing your suit with the arguments which God Himself has given in His promises.
Remember also that Christ Himself prays for His people. His prayer is prevalent, for if Jesus pleads He must prevail, and it is prevenient, for before the temptation comes He has already prayed. It is a very touching thing to hear those who love us praying for us when they think none hears but Heaven, and how much more to know that the great Intercessor pleads for His own. He loves His Church as a husband loves his spouse, for unity is the essence of the marriage bond. We are one with Christ who made Himself one with His people. He gave Himself for His Church, His whole life for her righteousness and teaching and quickening, and He now acts the part of Intercessor for her, nor will He rest till she is fetched home to Himself. This is the pattern which God has ordained for marriage, a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, reflecting Christ and His Church, and in which alone by His design the union of husband and wife is to be enjoyed.
Therefore our prayer for you and for your spouse is not that God would bless what is contrary to His Word, for He cannot bless what He has not ordained, but that He would bless you both with the far greater blessing of salvation through Jesus Christ alone, and with grace to walk in His holy way. We pray that if either of you is yet without Christ, you may be drawn to Him who alone can save, and that your home may be ordered according to His Word for His glory and for your own good.
We pray as Daniel prayed, forgetting ourselves and remembering those given to us, Cause Your face to shine upon Your sanctuary. So we ask the Lord to revive you again, to raise up what is sleepy and to make you to live at the highest point of life in Christ. Will You not revive us again, that Your people may rejoice in You. Pray it up into a blessing and make this the essence of your prayer, Lord, You can revive us, we believe it and we look for it.
May the Lord hear this prayer and answer it for Jesus sake, and may the God of Peace be with you all. Amen.
