Son will not listen to me/wont sleep/fighting

Beloved of All
Jesus please let my son listen to me and stop goofing off on the computer and go to bed. He wont go to sleep. This is absolutely insanity. I should have a right to say something to him without it turning into a huge fight, which it did tonight. Please let this stop, let him realize I am his parent, I have a right to tell him what to do, and he also needs to stop his obsession with the computer and the internet. Nothing works. Counseling, medication, turning off power, taking devices, nothing works. Please let him realize he has to change. Thank you Jesus, Amen.

We hear the deep frustration and exhaustion in your heart as you seek to guide your son in a way that honors God and nurtures his well-being. Parenting is a sacred responsibility, and the Word of God reminds us in Proverbs 22:6, "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." Yet we also know that children, even when raised in godly homes, can resist wisdom and discipline, especially in a world filled with distractions like the internet and technology.

Your authority as a parent is not just a right, it is a God-given responsibility. Ephesians 6:1-3 tells us, "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother,' which is the first commandment with a promise: 'that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth.'" Your son must understand that obedience to you is not optional; it is part of his obedience to God. However, we also recognize that enforcing this can be incredibly difficult when met with defiance.

The obsession with the computer and the internet is a spiritual battle as much as it is a behavioral one. The enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10), and he often uses distractions like these to pull our children away from godly discipline, rest, and time with the Lord. We must rebuke the spirit of rebellion and addiction that may be at work in your son’s heart. In the name of Jesus, we declare that this stronghold will be broken, and your son will come to a place of humility and obedience.

It is also important to examine whether there are underlying issues contributing to his behavior, such as anxiety, depression, or even spiritual oppression. While counseling and medication may not have yielded the results you hoped for, we encourage you to continue seeking wisdom from godly professionals who can provide insight. Sometimes, the battle requires both natural and spiritual intervention.

We also want to gently remind you that while your frustration is understandable, the way we respond to our children in these moments matters. Colossians 3:21 says, "Fathers, don’t provoke your children, so that they won’t be discouraged." This doesn’t mean we avoid discipline, but we must ensure our words and actions are seasoned with love and patience, even in correction. Ask the Lord to fill you with His peace and wisdom as you navigate these challenges.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, lifting up this mother and her son. Lord, we ask that You would soften this young man’s heart to receive the wisdom and discipline of his mother. Break the spirit of rebellion, distraction, and addiction that has taken hold of him. Father, we rebuke every influence of the enemy that seeks to pull him away from Your will and from the authority You have placed over him.

Lord, we ask that You would give this mother strength, patience, and discernment as she parents her son. Help her to speak truth in love and to stand firm in the authority You have given her. We pray that her son would come to understand the importance of obedience, not just to her, but to You. Restore peace in their home, Lord, and let there be a spirit of cooperation and respect.

We also ask that You would reveal any underlying issues in this young man’s heart, whether emotional, spiritual, or physical, and bring healing where it is needed. Father, we trust that You are working even when we cannot see it. Give this mother hope and remind her that her labor in the Lord is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).

We declare that this young man will grow into a man of God, walking in wisdom and honor. We thank You, Lord, for hearing our prayer and for Your faithfulness to answer. In the precious and powerful name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Continue to stand on God’s promises, even when the battle feels overwhelming. Galatians 6:9 reminds us, "Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up." Your son’s heart is not beyond the reach of God, and we believe that He is at work even now. Keep seeking Him, keep praying, and keep trusting that He will bring about the change that is needed.
