The prayer you have lifted for your son rises as incense before the throne. It is a cry forged in a mother’s love, and it finds its echo in the very heart of God. You ask for a hedge of protection, for deliverance from every form of abuse, for the exposure of darkness, and for a filling of peace and strength. These are not small petitions; they are the very gifts the Lord Jesus Christ delights to bestow upon His own, for He has delivered us from the power of darkness and translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son.
Consider what this deliverance means. Darkness is not merely an absence of light; it is the very element of Satan, the prince of darkness, and the cloak of sin. The soul that walks in gloom and the mind tormented by the evil of others needs more than a change of circumstance, it needs a rescue from the domain of shadows. And oh, what a rescue has been accomplished! At the cross, when the sixth hour brought a supernatural darkness over all the land, the Son of God entered into the thickest midnight of human misery and satanic assault. He was fighting then with the powers of darkness, and by His death He defeated them utterly. The darkness that fell upon Him was the symbol of wrath, but from it sprang the eternal light of hope. Because Christ has borne the penalty and vanquished the foe, He can now bring your son forth from any prison, whether of physical harm, emotional cruelty, or spiritual oppression. He brought Israel forth with silver and gold, willingly and effectually, when the lamb was slain; so too will He bring forth your child, not leaving him to stumble in the shadows.
You plead for angels and a hedge of protection. Know that the One who has delivered from the power of darkness will certainly help in every daily trouble. Did He give His own dear Son to put away sin, and will He not send His ministering spirits to guard and keep? Yes, He shall give His angels charge over him. But more than angelic shields, your son needs the peace that Christ alone imparts. “Peace! Perfect peace! In this dark world of sin? The blood of Jesus whispers peace within.” This is a present possession, a perfect peace kept by Jehovah Himself, whose mind is stayed on Him because he trusts. Teach your son, and yourself, to trust, for the darkness is often the schoolroom of faith. Saints may walk in gloom, but it is there they learn obedience and are made useful. The heir of heaven sometimes knows midnight, but he is bidden to follow his Leader through the darkness, leaning wholly on the arm invisible. “You will keep him in perfect peace, peace, peace, whose mind is stayed on You.”
And remember this, O woman of prayer: the darkness can never hide the deeds of the wicked from the eyes of Him who judges righteously. He will expose them and bring them to light, as surely as He scattered the primeval darkness with a word. The battle apparent at Golgotha, when all the powers of darkness hurled themselves against the Son of God, has been raging ever since, but the victory is already won. Therefore, do not let your heart be troubled. He that brought your son out of the pit of sin will deliver him from the snare of the fowler. There is a ransom found, not silver or gold, but the precious blood of Christ, and because of that, no condemnation can stand, and no permanent harm can overtake those who are hidden in Him. Even if the sorrows surge round, bear them with Jesus, and see what peace you shall enjoy.
Only mind this: while you trust, do not fold your hands as if the work were done. Continue in supplication, but stand firm in the confidence that deliverance is of the Lord. If the Son shall make him free, he shall be free indeed. Pray then, that your son may hear the command, “Show yourselves,” coming forth from the shadows into the marvelous light, and that he may kiss the Son, lest He be angry. God’s polished shaft against all evil is His own dear Son; trust in Him, and you will not be disappointed. The Lord our God be with you both in the hour of darkness, and soon, very soon, bring you into songs of deliverance that shall never end.
