The prayer that ascends this day for your son, born out of a mother’s heart or a father’s yearning, has reached the throne of the Heavenly Majesty. You plead for a hedge of protection, for deliverance from every form of abuse, for the exposure of deeds of darkness, for the ministry of angels, and for the infusion of divine peace and strength. These are no small petitions, but they are such as our God delights to answer for His children who walk in His appointed ways.
Remember, He charges all His angels to take care of His saints and to keep them in all right ways. The angels are not trifling spirits; they are ministering flames, and if the Lord has given them charge concerning your child, then no weapon formed against him shall prosper. Yet note well the condition: all right ways. If you go in the way of error, you cannot expect divine protection. Therefore, plead not only for a hedge, but plead that your son may walk in the footsteps of the Lord Jesus Christ, step by step, for it is in such ways that angelic protection is afforded. Pray that he be kept in childlike trust, leaning wholly upon Providential guidance, and then the celestial hosts shall form a cordon round him in the midst of this world’s temptations.
You ask that the deeds of darkness be exposed and brought to light. Be assured that the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness has already delivered us from the power of darkness and translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son. The very prayer you utter is a shooting of the arrow of the Lord’s deliverance. Deliverance is of the Lord, but it must be accomplished by human instrumentality. Your intercession, feebly as you may draw the bow, is yet strengthened by the hand of the Almighty. The Spirit of God empowers the saint’s cry, and the arrow speeds. God will save. Every hidden abuse, every covert act of malice, shall be unmasked in His perfect time; the darkness is but the place where His light shines brightest.
Yet take this caution: deliverance from the power of sin and evil is solely the work of divine power. It is not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shows mercy. In your earnestness, do not fall into the snare of thinking that your prayers, your tears, or your watchfulness can of themselves secure his safety. Look alone to the blood of Jesus Christ, which cleanses from all sin and covers the defenseless. The Father sees His Son bearing our sin; when He looks upon your household, let it be through the crimson lens of Calvary. Then, and only then, is there perfect safety.
And what of peace and strength? They are the portion of those who know their God. Ignorance of God is ignorance of bliss; but knowledge of God is a divine armor, by which we are able to ward off all the blows of the enemy. Teach your son to draw water out of the wells of the ordinances, Baptism, the Lord’s Table, the public worship of the saints, for these are places of refreshment where the cruel archers of Satan are baffled. Let him not be ashamed to be found in the house of God, even as the justified child is not afraid to meet the righteousness of God.
Take comfort from this: the God who would sooner empty Heaven of all the angelic host than allow one of His people who walks in His ways to suffer defeat, is the same God who fell upon the neck of the prodigal and kissed him much. He is abundant in mercy. The kisses of His love leave no room for doubt; they are pledges that all the promises in this Book belong to every repentant sinner who returns to Him. Pray, then, with boldness, yet with humility. Ask for angelic keeping. Ask that the deeds of darkness be laid bare. But above all, ask that your son may be found in Christ, for then he is beyond the reach of ultimate harm.
The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. If the Son shall make him free, he shall be free indeed. Until that glorious day, the arrows of the Lord’s deliverance are being shot by the prayers of the faithful. Draw the bow again and again; do not cease, for in due season you shall reap if you faint not.
Prayer Focus: God, Thank You for loving me. Thank You for loving me, Jesus. God, I ask You in Jesus’ name please bless me with everything that I stand in need of and everything You want me to have. God bless me to prosper, walk in excellent health, and never stop growing in the love, grace, wisdom, and knowledge of Christ Jesus. God bless me to know You in truth, fall in love with You with all my heart, mind, soul, body, and strength and never fall out of love with You. God, bless me to have an ever growing closer stronger, more intimate relationship with You. Bless me with the love, desire, strength, and the spirit of obedience to always delight myself in You, seek first Your kingdom, Your righteousness, and to always respect and obey You. Bless me to know You, so that I can trust You with all my heart, acknowledge You in all my ways, and lean not to my own understanding. Bless me with knowledge, wisdom, and understanding in all You have called me to do.
