Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You ask for hearts to be softened, but the prophets and apostles show us another way. Turn first from that pernicious curiosity which seeks to overturn the bounds God has set, and bruise your own heart. Mourn for your sins as Christ commanded, and let the fear of His words pierce you, for upon whom will He look but the lowly and quiet who tremble at His word? These women you pray for, pray rather that they be pricked in heart for their transgressions, that the walls of arrogance and hardness be shattered not by human sympathy but by the terror of judgment and the call to repentance.
Love is not puffed up, and long-suffering brings a calm no fortress can match, but it cannot abide where sin is coddled. If they lash out in pain, look well to your own soul first: what man can become an angel or a beast by his own choosing, yet we busy ourselves with others while neglecting our own nature. Bind the transgressor with faithful admonition until God be appeased, for if you bind not, the indissoluble chains of His wrath await. Let hell be ever before your eyes, not to drive you to despair but to brace up your soul and cast out the desires that beset us.
The Spirit bears witness with our spirit when we cry Abba Father, but only as we stand in that grace which does not make peace with iniquity. Therefore cease from a prayer that might ask amiss, and pray instead with trembling that all may turn from every crooked way and find the true healing of a broken and contrite heart.
