You ask for the prayer meetings to grow, and you fear the creeping excuses that drain resolve. The desire is good, but examine whether you desire the growth of numbers or the growth of holiness within those few who gather. When the Lord said to learn of Him for He is meek and lowly in heart, He promised rest, not crowds. A small band of souls truly bowed in humility will shake the city more than a multitude of proud hearts. Do not despise the day of small things; the eyes of the Lord run to and fro not seeking many activities, but hearts fully committed to Him. If you would see those meetings increase, first increase in lowliness yourself. Let each one who comes strip off every excuse before stepping through the door. You read of the man who bought land, the one who married a wife, the one with new oxen, and you fear that same spirit. But do you not see that those excuses were not the root? The root was a heart that prized earthly things above the wedding feast. So I say, set no store by the weather or the health of the body or the business of the day. If you are dead with Christ, as you quote from the Apostle, then heat and rain and weariness are dead to you. The love of Christ must compel you not merely to attend, but to be already dead to the hindrance.
Prayer is a great weapon, truly, a preservative of the soul. But it is a weapon that rusts in the hand of a careless man. You cry out for the Spirit of grace and supplication, but He does not descend upon those who yawn. When you go to those meetings, do you go with the same urgency as men fleeing a burning house? Prayer was made earnestly by the church for Peter, and he was delivered. Earnestness, not length of words, pierces the heavens. And if you would have the outreach prevail like the word in Ephesus, you must first see that your own life is a word of power. Converts are not made by eloquence; they are made by men who have first learned meekness from Christ, who carry His easy yoke and light burden. For the yoke is easy not because the labor is small, but because love makes it so. He who labors for the salvation of souls, if he labors with love, feels no weight, but if he labors for display or habit, the burden will crush him.
You ask that attesting miracles might follow the preaching. But the greatest miracle is a changed life. When Zacchaeus stood and gave half his goods to the poor and restored fourfold, that was the true sign. Do you wish to see such sound conversions? Then let the evangelists first make restitution in their own hearts, let them root out the secret greed and pride. For a man cannot sell what he ought to give freely and then expect God to bless his words. The word of the Lord prevails not through clever arguments but through pure vessels. And you ask to keep the evil one away on those days. That is a right prayer, but know that the evil one flees not merely because you ask, but because you have given him no foothold through hidden sins. The Apostle warns us not to be ignorant of his devices. If there is envy among the team, or a loose tongue, or a love of money, then you open the door yourself.
Do not fear that the increase will fail to come if it tarries. The Lord who delayed coming to Lazarus did so that glory might be the greater. Perhaps He delays the visible swelling of your gatherings to test the fidelity of the few. But if you will continue steadfast, if you will not grow weary in well-doing, if each of those intercessors and evangelists will first seek the rest of their own souls by taking Christ’s meekness upon them, then in due season the Lord will draw people. For no man can come unless the Father draws him, and the Father draws those who bear the likeness of the Son. Be that likeness. Then you will not need to fear the rain or the heat, for you will have found that rest which no circumstance disturbs. And the prayer meetings, whether two or three days a week, will be not a duty but a fountain of refreshment. Go forth each morning having first made God propitious by prayer and supplication, and though the marketplace be a storm, your little boat will not sink.
