We lift up our hearts in prayer for the brave coal miners who labor in difficult and often dangerous conditions to provide for their families and contribute to our communities. Father God, we ask that You watch over each one of them as they descend into the depths of the earth. Protect them from harm, accidents, and the long-term health risks that come with their work. Surround them with Your angels to guard their steps and keep them safe from every danger.
Lord, we pray for their physical strength and endurance. The work they do is grueling, and we ask that You sustain their bodies, renew their energy, and shield them from exhaustion and injury. Provide them with moments of rest and refreshment so they may return home safely to their loved ones each day. We also ask for Your provision over their families, that they would lack no good thing and that their needs, spiritual, emotional, and material, would be met according to Your riches in glory.
Father, we know that the work of their hands is honorable, and we thank You for the way they serve others through their labor. May they find dignity and purpose in their work, knowing that whatever they do, they do it unto You (Colossians 3:23). We pray that You would draw near to them in the darkness of the mines, that they would sense Your presence and find comfort in knowing You are with them always.
We also lift up the mining companies and supervisors, asking that You would grant them wisdom, integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility for the safety and well-being of their workers. May they prioritize human life over profit and take every precaution to ensure safe working conditions.
Lord, we ask that You would bring revival to the hearts of these miners. In the quiet moments of their work, speak to them about Your love, Your sacrifice, and Your desire for a personal relationship with them. May many come to know You as their Savior and Lord, finding hope and eternal life in Jesus Christ. For it is written, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life" (John 3:16). There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12), and we pray that these men would come to experience the transformative power of the gospel.
We also pray for the communities that rely on the mining industry. May there be unity, support, and a shared commitment to the well-being of all who live and work there. Provide opportunities for these towns to thrive, and let Your light shine brightly in places that may feel forgotten or overlooked.

Intercessory prayer is the sweetest prayer God ever hears, and it is exceedingly prevalent. What wonders it has wrought! The Prayer Meeting is the place where the Church of God may plead for individuals, and so we lift up these coal miners before the throne, remembering that prayer is the shadow of a coming blessing. Let us pray our Brothers out of their troubles and not desert them, for prayer, mighty prayer, will yet prevail if it has but time.
Yet mark the dangerous ice upon which they daily tread. Those lungs are hardly sound; the gray hairs come early to such men. Delay is dangerous, let none linger in the path of destruction when life hangs so frail. And for those who know the Lord, let not a cold heart or unholy life hinder our petitions. Unanswered prayer should be a search warrant to examine ourselves. Imitate the prayer of Jacob in its humility of spirit, pleading with arguments and spreading the case before Him. If the Prayer Meetings are cold, then pray twice as much. Do not run away from your Master’s work because you feel unfit, but for that reason do twice as much.
Remember the Word unto Your servant, this is what God always intends prayer to be, a reminding our heavenly Father of His promises. What danger is there that equals the peril of the soul? You ask prayers for the coal miners, and it is good to remember them before God, for they daily go down into darkness and face death in the body. Yet I implore you, let not your prayers stop with the body alone. That danger which the senses perceive is not the true danger at all.
The real pit is sin, the true darkness is ignorance of God, the crushing weight is a heart unrepentant. The devil has dug a far deeper mine in every soul, and there he sets his snares. So while you pray for their limbs and their breath, much more cry out that they be rescued from the wrath to come. What does it profit a man to come up safe from the earth’s depths, yet to descend into everlasting ruin for loving this present world and his own ease?
Many risk their lives daily for a wage, yet never lift a thought to Heaven. That is to tempt God, to plunge into mortal danger without repentance, as if saying, Let me see whether God will save me. But the devil whispers such things. Let these men rather endure hardship as seeing Him who is invisible, toiling not merely for bread that perishes, but so that through honest labor and the fear of God they might lay hold of eternal life.
Therefore, when you pray, beseech the Lord not only to shield them from accidents, but to break their hearts loose from covetousness, from filthy talk, from drunkenness, from every weight that would drag them down. And do not only pray, go further and admonish. If you see a horse rushing toward a cliff, you jerk the bit and lash it; the pain is the very mother of safety. So too, if any of them walk in disobedience, apply the saving rebuke.
For if Epaphroditus hazarded his life to serve Paul in chains, counting his own life nothing for the Gospel’s sake, how much more should we hazard a few sharp words to snatch a brother from the fire? Pray then, yes, but let prayer be the beginning of a fervent care, so that when they come forth from the pit of the earth, they may find themselves prepared to meet the Sun of Righteousness, and not the darkness which no pickaxe can break.
