To be pressed to put your hand to what you know to be untrue is a sore and wearying trial, and to feel alone in it makes the burden heavier still. You say that evil people always win and that God has not intervened, yet the very fact that you have not signed is itself a mercy, a space in which grace may keep you from a false step.
I know of nothing more delightful to the believer than every morning to commit the day's troubles to God and then go down into the world feeling, my Father knows it all. Your text says, What time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee. That is the short way with the tempter when fear besieges the soul. You are afraid, and rightly so, for the pressure is great, but fear is the time for trust, not for yielding. Commit this document, these numbers, these men and their urgency, to Him who sees all and who will judge righteously.
Our only safe course is to come to God as we actually are, and to deal honestly before Him. Scripture warns us, If we say we have fellowship with Him and walk in darkness, we lie and do not the truth. To sign a false statement, to validate wrong numbers because you are wearied, would be to walk in darkness and to lend your name to a lie. God is your rock and your salvation, He only is your rock, and He asks for honest dealing. It is far better to be thought troublesome by men than to be untrue before God. Let God be true and every man a liar. The Lord will be your wisdom in this strait. Pray as the Psalmist did, Teach me Thy statutes, teach me when to be silent and when to speak, that I may not give occasion to the enemy.
You write that you are alone and cannot find a helper in time. Hear the word of the Lord Jesus, who knew what it was to be forsaken by friends and left alone before His adversaries, yet He said, I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. So it is with you. Though every advocate seems far off, the Father is with you. He hears you. You declared your ways to God and He has heard you. You are alone, yet not alone. And the promise stands, He only is my rock and my salvation. Look not to the sunbeam but to the Sun, trace your mercies to God, and say still, He only is my rock.
Do not act in haste under pressure. What seems urgent to them need not govern your conscience. You are not bound to sign what is false because men press you. It is lawful and right to ask for time in writing, to state plainly that you dispute the figures and cannot in good conscience sign as presented, to keep copies of all that is sent and said, and to note the date and manner of the pressure. Write a brief, calm note that you require correction of the numbers and time to seek counsel before signing anything. If no lawyer can be found this hour, seek the clerk of the court, a legal aid office, or a trusted minister or counselor who can stand with you as a witness while you ask for that time. To ask for truth and time is not rebellion, it is honesty.
Struggling child of God, standing for what is right, expect that your trouble will not last forever. He that is your rock will sustain you through this day, and one day you will look back and see how He kept your hand from falsehood.
Let us pray together. O Lord, Thou seest this pressed and weary one, tempted to yield for peace. Keep this soul from a lie, give wisdom to answer with truth and meekness, provide a helper and make a way where no way is seen. Let this dear one feel that Thou art near, that Thou art the rock, and that to trust Thee now is the path of safety. Teach Thy statutes, guard the lips and the hand, and let deliverance come in Thy time and way. For Christ's sake, who is the Truth, Amen.
Stand fast in honesty, commit your way to Him anew this morning, and do not set your name to what is false.
