Should we

We hear the struggle in your question, and we want to address it with both truth and compassion. The world often glamorizes sin, making it appear desirable or even enviable—especially when it comes to sexual immorality. But Scripture is clear: envy is a snare, and lust is a distortion of God’s good design.

First, let us rebuke the very notion that we should envy those living in sin. The psalmist warns, *"Do not fret because of evildoers, neither be envious against those who work unrighteousness"* (Psalm 37:1 WEB). Envy is a poison to the soul, and when we covet what God has forbidden, we open ourselves to spiritual decay. The apostle Paul writes, *"For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, our life, is revealed, then you will also be revealed with him in glory. Put to death therefore your members which are on the earth: sexual immorality, uncleanness, depraved passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry"* (Colossians 3:3-5 WEB). Fornication—sex outside of marriage—is not something to admire or desire; it is a violation of God’s holy standard and brings destruction to those who practice it.

We must also address the heart behind this question. The longing for intimacy is not wrong in itself—God designed it! But He designed it to be fulfilled within the covenant of marriage between one man and one woman. The writer of Hebrews declares, *"Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled; but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers"* (Hebrews 13:4 WEB). When we look at the world’s counterfeit pleasures and feel envy, we are believing the lie that sin offers something better than God’s best for us. But the truth is, sin always leaves emptiness, guilt, and brokenness in its wake. The fleeting pleasure of fornication cannot compare to the lasting joy of walking in purity and obedience to Christ.

If you are single, we encourage you to pursue godly marriage—not as a means to fulfill lust, but as a sacred union that reflects Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:22-33 WEB). If you are struggling with lust or envy, take your thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5 WEB). Flee from temptation and fill your mind with things that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, and of good report (Philippians 4:8 WEB). The world’s version of love is a cheap imitation, but God’s design is beautiful, holy, and worth waiting for.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble and repentant hearts. Forgive us for the times we have looked at sin with envy or desire, forgetting that Your ways are higher and Your plans for us are good. Lord, we ask that You purify our hearts and minds, helping us to see Your truth clearly. Break the power of lust and covetousness in our lives, and replace it with a hunger for righteousness. Give us the strength to flee from temptation and the wisdom to pursue relationships that honor You. For those who are single, we pray for godly spouses who will walk with them in faith, and for those who are struggling with past sin, we ask for Your healing and restoration. Help us to fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, and to trust in Your perfect timing and plan. We pray all this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Remember, beloved, that the enemy wants to distort your desires and lead you away from God’s best. But Christ has already overcome the world (John 16:33 WEB), and in Him, you have the power to walk in victory. Do not settle for the world’s counterfeit when God offers you the real thing—love, joy, and peace that surpass all understanding. Keep your heart steadfast in Him.

We understand the struggle, friend. It's easy to feel left out or envious when we see others seemingly enjoying what we perceive as forbidden fruit. But remember, God's ways are not our ways, and His timing is perfect. Let's not forget the wisdom in Proverbs 27:1, "Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring." Instead of envying, let's trust in God's plan for our lives.

Let's pray together:

Dear Lord, we come to You today, acknowledging our human nature and the struggles we face. Help us to resist the temptation to envy others' situations, especially when it comes to sexual sin. Remind us that Your ways are higher and Your plans for us are good. Give us the strength to resist temptation and the wisdom to make choices that honor You. For those of us who are single, we ask for patience and contentment in our current state. For those struggling with past sin, we ask for healing and restoration. Help us to fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, and trust in Your perfect timing and plan. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Come to the Lord's holy presence. Seek him with all your heart. Cling to his Word and meditate on it moment by moment by positive thoughts and joy in the heart (James 1:2-4), knowing that the Lord is good and to him be all the praise. Seek first God's kingdom and his righteousness (Matthew 6:33). Even though life may feel hard, the Lord's hand will be on you, and he will answer in his time. I am praying for you. Amen.
