Second oldest son to move out my apartment

I need my second oldest son to move out of me and wife apartment. He needs to live with his lady. He does nothing and doesn't help with anything. Just sits in the apt watching TV and I need him to live with his lady.

We hear your burden about your second oldest son still living in your and your wife's apartment and the frustration you feel because he does nothing to help and spends his time watching TV. We understand the strain this puts on your marriage and your home, and we bring this before the Lord with you.

We want to gently but clearly address something in your request that does not align with biblical principles. You said he needs to live with his lady. If this lady is not his wife, God does not call him to live with her. That would be living together outside of marriage, which Scripture calls fornication and sexual immorality. We must not encourage our children to move from one disobedience into another. Hebrews 13:4 says Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled: but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers. And 1 Corinthians 6:18 says Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. If your son is in a relationship with a woman, the godly path is not cohabitation, but either to pursue courtship with the goal of marriage to a fellow Christian believer if God wills, or to live separately and pursue purity. Genesis 2:24 says Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh. Leaving and joining is framed by marriage between a man and a woman, and we pray for that kind of holy commitment rather than a living arrangement that would dishonor God. If they are not ready for that lifelong covenant, then he should not live with her, but should become responsible for himself as a man.

We also see the issue of idleness and dishonoring your household. Scripture is clear that a child, even a grown child living under his parents' roof, is to honor his father and mother, and that a man is to work diligently. Ephesians 6:1-3 says Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise: that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth. And 2 Thessalonians 3:10 says For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither let him eat. Colossians 3:23 says Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men. A son who sits idle and does not help in the home is not walking in the responsibility God has for him, and as parents you have a biblical right and duty to set loving but firm boundaries in your home.

We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God and that our prayers are heard. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. We encourage you to bring every need in the name of Jesus, trusting in His death and resurrection for the forgiveness of sins, and believing that Romans 10:9 says that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, asking for Your will to be done in this family and this home. Lord, we lift up this husband and wife who are weary and feel their home is not being honored. Grant them wisdom, unity, courage and grace to lead their household in love and truth. Give the father strength to speak with firmness and kindness, and give the wife peace as they seek to honor You together. We lift up their second oldest son to You. Lord, convict his heart where he has been idle and disrespectful, and turn him toward diligence, humility and honor for his parents. Teach him to work heartily as for You and to take responsibility for his own life. If he is in a relationship with a woman, Lord, we ask that You convict him about purity and the sanctity of marriage. If it is Your will for them to be married, lead them toward a godly, biblical marriage between a man and a woman that honors You, with counsel and preparation, and if not, give him the strength to flee sexual immorality and to live in a way that is holy before You. Provide for him a path to independence that is righteous, whether through work and his own housing, and give him a desire to be a godly man and perhaps a godly husband in the future. We ask that You restore peace to this apartment and that this family would seek You first above comfort or convenience. We pray this in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.

We encourage you to have a calm and clear conversation with your son, with your wife united with you, setting clear expectations and a timeline for him to become self supporting and to contribute to the household while he is there, and making clear that living with his girlfriend outside of marriage is not an option you can bless. Encourage him toward employment, stewardship, and if he desires marriage, toward pursuing it in a way that honors God, seeking a Christian believer and seeking pastoral counsel. Trust that as you honor God in your home, He will honor your faithfulness and provide the wisdom you need.

We hear how heavy this has become for you and your wife, sharing your apartment with your son when he is not contributing and you are carrying the load. Wanting peace in your own home and wanting your son to step into more responsibility are understandable desires, and we are praying with you for wisdom in how to move forward.

It can help to think about boundaries as property lines. They clarify what each person is responsible for, our choices, our time, our home, and they let us stay connected while still being able to say a clear yes or no in love. When everyone knows what is expected, there is less frustration for all.

One step that often steadies these family conversations is for you and your wife to get on the same page first, privately, about what you can offer and what you cannot, and what a healthy next season would look like for your household. Then with your son, a calm, respectful conversation where you speak the truth in love can lay out clear expectations around helping in the home, and a realistic timeline for his next living arrangement, can give everyone something concrete to work toward. If it would help to have another steady voice present, a trusted pastor or counselor can help keep that conversation kind and clear.

Father, we lift this husband and wife and their son to You. Give them wisdom, peace in their home, and grace for honest conversations. Guide this young man toward responsibility and maturity, and guide his parents as they love him well. Lead this family in Your way. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your prayer concerning your household has been heard, and the burden you carry with your wife is understood. To love a grown son and yet to feel the strain of his idleness under your roof is a trial that requires much wisdom and grace from the Lord.

Scripture teaches that the family is ordered by God for mutual honor and help, and that children, even when grown, are to honor father and mother, while parents are to guide with firm and tender love. The Word also teaches plainly that if a man will not work he shall not eat, and that every man should bear his own burden and provide for his own household through honest labor. A life spent in idleness watching and contributing nothing is not according to the calling God has given to a man, and it wearies those who love him.

You have asked that your son would go to live with his lady. We must speak to you faithfully in love concerning this. In the sight of God, marriage is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and living together and the union that belongs to marriage are holy only within that covenant. To live together outside of marriage is not a path we can ask God to bless, for He calls His people to purity and to holiness, and His way is for our good. We cannot pray that God would prosper a course that is outside His design, but we can and do pray that God would work in your son a heart that seeks to please Christ first, to walk in purity, to labor diligently, and to take up the responsibilities of manhood in a manner worthy of the gospel.

If your son intends to be with this woman, the godly and honorable way is to seek marriage, with counsel, with commitment, and with preparation to provide as a husband ought, and not to enter into cohabitation. If marriage is not before him in a holy and lawful way, then he is called to live in a way that is chaste and self controlled, and to find his own dwelling through honest work, not through an unholy arrangement. In either case, what he most needs is new life in Jesus Christ, for only through faith in the Son of God, who died to put away sin and rose again, can any man be made right with God and enabled to walk in newness of life.

We will pray for you and your wife, that the Lord would give you unity, patience, and clarity as you set loving and firm boundaries in your home. We pray that He would give you words seasoned with grace and truth as you speak to your son, and that you would be able to encourage both work and godliness without provoking to wrath. We pray for your son, that God would awaken him to his need of Christ, grant him repentance and faith, deliver him from sloth, and teach him to labor with his own hands and to act with honor toward you, toward his lady, and toward the Lord. We pray also for the young woman, that she too would know the mercy of God in Christ and be led to desire what is pure and holy. And we pray that if it be the Lord's will for your son to marry, it would be entered into as a holy covenant before God, undertaken with preparation, provision, and reverence, and not in haste or in impurity.

May the Lord make your home a place of prayer, where Christ is trusted and His Word is honored. Seek counsel from faithful pastors near you who can walk with you and with your son face to face, and continue to commit all things to Him who hears the cries of His people and who is able to make all grace abound toward you.

Father, we ask in the name of Jesus Christ, Thy only Son, that Thou wouldst have mercy upon this family. Grant salvation where it is needed, turn hearts from sin, teach diligence where there has been sloth, and establish this household in holiness, peace, and love. Give to the father and mother wisdom from above, and to the son a new heart to seek Thee and to walk in Thy ways. Amen.

Lord Jesus please richly bless, protect and guide them. Please help them in accordance with your perfect will Father. Thank you and praise you. In your holy name I pray. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
