"Lord God,
You alone are the true God, living and reigning in heaven.
Search our heart and reveal to us any modern idols—anything we are trusting in for security, worth, or satisfaction outside of You.
Forgive us for the times we have looked to lifeless things rather than to Your living arms.
Do not let us be conformed to the empty and deaf things of this world.
Instead, shape us into the image of Your Son.
Make our life fully alive in Your Spirit, reflecting Your love, grace, and truth to those around us.

We join with you in this searching prayer and we say amen to your desire that the Lord would reveal any modern idols in our hearts.

You have prayed according to Psalm 115:8 which says Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them. That whole Psalm reminds us that idols are not only carved images of silver and gold, Psalm 115:4, but anything lifeless that we look to instead of the living God. They have mouths but do not speak, eyes but do not see, ears but do not hear, Psalm 115:5-6, and when we trust in them we become spiritually dull and lifeless like them, unable to truly hear God or walk in His life.

We confess that in our modern world idols rarely look like statues. They can be money, success, approval, comfort, technology, entertainment, even relationships or our own image and abilities when we trust in them for security, worth, or satisfaction outside of the Lord. Scripture is clear about this. You shall have no other gods before me, Exodus 20:3, and we are warned to put to death covetousness which is idolatry, Colossians 3:5, and Little children, keep yourselves from idols, 1 John 5:21. An idol is anything we allow to take the place that belongs only to God on the throne of our hearts, as Ezekiel 14:3 speaks of idols in the heart.

We love that you called upon the Lord God as the Bread of Heaven and the Word of Life, for Jesus is indeed the Word of God. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, John 1:1, and Jesus said I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will not be hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty, John 6:35. Only He can truly satisfy, and only through His name do we have access to the Father. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6, and There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. We are thankful you lifted up Jesus as the Word of God, for it is by His blood and His name alone that we can boldly ask God to search us.

We also pray as the psalmist did, Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way, Psalm 139:23-24. We need the Holy Spirit to reveal what we cannot see ourselves, and to turn us from empty things to the living Christ. Scripture calls us not to be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, Romans 12:2, so that we as with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord, the Spirit, 2 Corinthians 3:18. This is the opposite of Psalm 115:8, instead of becoming like deaf and lifeless idols, we become like the living Son of God.

So together we pray.

Father, You alone are the true and living God who dwells in heaven and does whatever pleases You, Psalm 115:3. We ask in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son that You would search our hearts and shine Your light on any modern idol we have trusted in for security, worth, or satisfaction apart from You. Forgive us for the times we have turned to lifeless things for what only You can give, and for looking to the world to fill us rather than resting in Your living arms. We repent and we turn from every idol, and we ask You to cleanse us through the blood of Jesus. Do not let us be conformed to the empty and deaf things of this world, but transform us by Your Spirit and renew our minds through Your Word. Shape us into the image of Your Son, make us fully alive in Your Spirit, and make our lives reflect Your love, grace, and truth to those around us. Flee from idolatry, 1 Corinthians 10:14, and help us to love You with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, Mark 12:30. You are our help and our shield, Psalm 115:11, and we trust not in idols but in You alone. We pray this in the precious name of Jesus Christ our Lord and our Bread of Life, amen.

Thank you for sharing this prayer so honestly. Wanting God to search your heart and show you where trust has drifted is a humble and brave place to be.

We hear in your words a desire not just to feel sorry about misplaced trust but to actually turn toward Him. That turning often happens slowly, more like training than trying hard once. Small, regular ways of staying close to Him matter more than big moments of resolve.

One gentle practice that may help this week is to pause at the end of the day for a few quiet minutes and notice where you looked for security, worth, or satisfaction that day, whether it was achievement, approval, comfort, control, or something else, and simply name it before the Lord without rushing to fix yourself. Ask Him to show you what you were hoping that thing would give you, and to teach you to receive that from Him instead. Bringing one honest observation to Him in prayer and letting Him shape you over time keeps the focus on His work in you, not just your effort.

We are praying for you as you keep seeking Him.

Father, You know our hearts better than we do. Reveal where we have trusted other things and gently draw us back to Yourself. Forgive us and form us to be more like Your Son, alive in Your Spirit and reflecting Your love to others. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your prayer is a most needful and scriptural one, and the very fact that you pray it is evidence that the Spirit of God is at work within you. No heart by nature cries out against its own idols. It is grace that teaches a man to say, Search me and try me, and to desire that every false trust should be torn down.

The Psalmist speaks a solemn truth when he says, Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them. An idol is deaf and dumb and lifeless, and the man who bows to it becomes deaf to the voice of God, dumb in prayer and praise, and lifeless toward heaven. You become like that which you worship. If you trust in gold, you grow hard and cold as metal. If you trust in the praise of men, you become empty as their breath. And just now, as we have often warned, in some professedly Christian places the idol is intellectualism, culture, modern thought. Whatever name it bears, it has no right to stand where Christ alone should reign, for it believes very little that appertains to Christ. These modern idols promise security and worth and satisfaction, but they cannot hear your cry nor give you bread.

You have done well to call the Lord the Bread of Heaven and the Word of Life, for Jesus is the Word of God. He alone can satisfy. Our life is not dependent on ourselves, but is safe in our Lord. As the apostle says, I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me. While He works in us mightily our life is active and powerful, and if we turn from Him to lifeless things our new life becomes faint and sickly. Christ is our life, but He works in us through His Holy Spirit who dwelleth in us evermore.

Do not be conformed to the empty and deaf things of this world. There is a wondrous power in the penitent eye, in the full confession that makes a clean breast of every sin before the face of the Lord Jesus Christ. Whenever the child of God feels that he has gone astray in any way, that though he did live near to God he has gone back and grown cold in heart, he has only to come to Christ again, and cry after Him, and confess his folly in having left Him. Bring these modern idols into His light. Name them before Him. The love of comfort, the craving for approval, the trust in riches or in knowledge, whatever it be that you have looked to for help or shield instead of the living God, lay it before Him and forsake it.

And remember this blessed exchange, that as those who trust idols become like idols, so those who trust Christ become like Christ. Whatever Christ is, His people are in Him. We rejoice in Christ and nothing else but Christ. Christ and no philosophy, Christ and no modern thought, Christ, the whole of Christ, and nothing else but Christ. Christ in you, the hope of glory. Christ possessed, Christ experienced, Christ in you curing your sin and filling your soul with love to holiness, this is worth a world. In Him you are perfect before God, not by any righteousness of your own, for in my flesh dwelleth no good thing, but perfect in Christ Jesus. And because you are perfect in Him, you will long to be more like Him.

So I join my prayer with yours. Lord God, You alone are the true and living God, reigning in heaven. Forgive us for seeking life among dead things. Search us and cleanse us, and enlarge our receiving power till we take in Christ into our inmost soul by faith. Be Thou our help and our shield. Make us fully alive in Your Spirit, that we may reflect the love and grace and truth of Your Son to all around us. Keep every part of us, and every power of us, in the hands of Christ until that day when in His image we shall stand. In His name we pray. Amen.
