The sun beats down and the flesh grows weary, this I well understand, for the body groans under the load of daily toil. Yet have you not considered that the natural sun, which now afflicts you, is but a faint shadow of that glorious Sun of Righteousness who arises with healing in His wings? When the heat is heavy, lift your eyes to Him whose countenance is as the sun in its strength, yet who deigns to smile upon us with milder beams as our Brother and Redeemer. In your longing to escape the burning rays, do not miss the greater light. The very discomfort you feel might be a spur to seek more earnestly the face of Jesus Christ, who is the center and soul of all things, the lamp that lights us, the fire that warms us.
You speak of a better life of work, and you pray to the Lord Jesus for relief. That is well, for we must work, there is a necessity laid upon us. Even our blessed Master said, “I must work.” He could not sit still and see the sons of men perish; love compelled Him. So too, if you are His, a like constraint will be upon you, not merely to escape hardship, but to do the work appointed you with all your might. Whether you stand in the sun among the creatures of the zoo, or ply the strings of a puppet for the refreshment of others, let the labor be done as unto the Lord, and it shall not be lost. The Holy Spirit does not lull us into sloth; wherever He works, He makes men work. He works in us to will and to do, that we also may work out our own salvation with fear and trembling. So, while you seek a change of occupation, take heed lest you imagine that any outward shift can give true rest to your soul. That rest is found only in the finished work of Christ.
Consider what you are in yourself: without strength. Your case, like mine, is legally weak before God’s bar. You could not plead your own righteousness any more than you can shield yourself from the sun’s stroke by your own hand. But Christ has undertaken the cause of all who trust Him, and His finished sacrifice is the sole ground of our hope. “It is finished”, the great debt paid, the full atonement made. Therefore, let your anxious thoughts about tomorrow’s labor be swallowed up in that grand truth. If He has done so much for your soul, will He not also provide for your body? Cast your care on Him, for He cares for you, and be not of an unbelieving heart. Even among His own people, faith is all too rare a thing; we are apt to doubt whether He will be mindful of us in our daily trials. Yet He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Jesus Christ.
Pray, then, that the Lord would establish the work of your hands. You may ask this honestly if your work is righteous and for His glory. But remember, it is not our work that yields our truest consolation; it is His work, His finished, glorious work, appearing unto us as His servants. Let that be ever before your eyes, and your labor, whether in the sun or in the shade, will be sweetened. Yea, the very Son of God kept a kind of Sabbath even while He healed the sick, for He was doing the work that brings glory to the Father and rest to men. So may your daily toil become a holy ministry, as you do it in His name and for love of Him.
Be not hasty to flee the sun if it be the post where Providence has placed you. Yet if the Lord opens a door to a calling less exposed, as you hope with puppetry and lighter duties, walk through it as He leads. Only let Christ be your portion, and you will find that whether the sun smites by day or the moon by night, the Lord will keep you from all evil. He will guard your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.
