Beloved of All
Your care for your former father in law in this very serious illness is a compassionate and right burden to bring before the Lord. The greatest need any person has when facing death is to be right with God, and Scripture makes clear how that happens.
God's law is holy and good because it shows us what sin is. Jesus taught that the law reaches beyond outward actions to the heart and mind, and in that light we all stand guilty. The law can reveal sin and it condemns us when we have broken it, but it cannot make us righteous or save us. If righteousness could come by keeping rules, then Christ would not have needed to die. The Bible teaches that no one is justified by works of the law, but only by faith in Jesus Christ who fulfilled the law and died in our place.
Through faith in Him we are delivered from the condemnation of the law and brought into newness of life in the Spirit. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ has set us free from the law of sin and death. In our inner being we may delight in God's law and want what is good, yet we find another principle at work in us that wars against that desire and brings us into captivity to sin. Only Jesus can free us from that bondage.
That is the hope to pray for above all else for your former father in law. More than physical healing, he needs to trust in Jesus alone for salvation, believing that Jesus died for his sins and rose again. God desires that people turn to Him and live, and He offers forgiveness and eternal life to everyone who believes in His Son.
So we pray that God in His mercy would grant him time and clarity to hear the gospel and to put his faith in Christ alone, not in his own goodness or efforts. Pray that you or others near him will have opportunity to share that good news with him with love and truth while he can still hear it.
We also ask God for mercy for his body. Jesus showed His power and compassion to heal and to give life as He works in perfect harmony with the Father, and He is still able to heal according to His wise and loving will. We pray that if it is the Father's will, He would bring healing and relief from suffering, and that He would bring comfort and peace to him and to all who love him.
We join you in asking God to intervene quickly, to save and to heal as He knows best, trusting His goodness and power through Jesus Christ. Amen.
