Your request concerning the sale of your house has been brought before the Lord, and we join with you in carrying this burden to Him who hears prayer. You speak of waiting for offers, of a house you desire to move to, and of a mortgage that must be closed, and you confess that you are worried and long for a speedy answer. This waiting is a trial of faith, and it is in such trials that the soul learns what it is to wait upon God.
Know this, that you have a waiting God. He waits to be gracious unto you. When our own plans have broken down and our hearts are anxious, we find the Lord lovingly waiting, graciously waiting, ready to pardon and ready to provide. There is a singular patience in His waiting, and there is a final success to all this waiting when it turns to a glorious transaction of grace upon the heart. When God has waited for the soul, that soul is brought to wait on Him, and His patience toward His chosen is not in vain. He is not defeated in His purposes for His redeemed.
Therefore let your soul wait thou only upon God, and be thou silent before Him. Rest calm and undisturbed. The Psalmist teaches us that faith should hang on nothing but the promise of God, and have no other support but that, floating as it were in the ether of confidence, needing nothing to uphold it but the right hand of the Majesty on high. They that wait upon the Lord shall not want any good thing. If you have grace to turn your eye to God, you may walk straight on in confidence, though the way seems hedged and the market is slow, and say that if God bids you wait, it shall be well.
This is brave waiting. Wait on the Lord, be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart. Waiting upon God sustains courage. If you begin to grow weary, wait upon Him with double earnestness, for waiting upon God is the way to renew your strength until you mount up with eagles wings. Your heart is strengthened by waiting upon Him because you receive a mysterious strength through the incoming of the Eternal Spirit into your soul. Go to your God when you are out of order, and He will strengthen your heart by His mysterious power. As David set his seal to it, wait, I say, on the Lord.
Remember also that God sits at the helm of Providence, and when the vessel is almost on the rock, He can pilot it into the deep waters again. He pleads the causes of His people and redeems their lives. Cast your burden upon Him, for He cares for you. Your house, your sale, your future dwelling, all are in His hand, and not one good thing shall be withheld from those who walk uprightly.
Let us pray for you. O God of our salvation, in whom alone is our hope, look upon this anxious heart. Thou knowest the need concerning this house and this mortgage. Grant in Thy wisdom a gracious provision, whether speedily or after longer waiting, as Thou seest best. Quiet the worry with Thy peace, teach this soul to wait only upon Thee, and strengthen the heart with courage. Keep this one trusting in salvation through Jesus Christ alone, and satisfied with the goodness of Thy house. Scripture reminds us that we stand only because of God's mercy. The prophet Hosea was given a painful sign when God declared that for a season He would withhold mercy from His unfaithful people, and it showed how serious it is to live without that mercy, because without it there is nothing left to sustain us. Yet that same message does not end with judgment. It moves toward a promise of restoration, because God's love is stubborn and will not let go. Even when His people turn away and fail, His love pursues them. He desires to heal, to forgive, and to draw His own to Himself forever, not because of our faithfulness but because of His. That is the mercy you can appeal to now, not as something you earn but as something God delights to give to those who belong to Jesus Christ.
The Bible also has much to say about houses. Solomon, when he had finished the temple, confessed that no house built by human hands can contain God, yet God in His grace filled that house with His glory to show that He dwells with His people. Later the New Testament teaches that God's house is not a building at all, but His people themselves, and that Christ is over that house not as a servant but as a Son, as the builder who is greater than the building. If you have put your trust in Jesus, you are part of that house, and your truest security is not in an earthly address but in belonging to Him. He knows you need a place to live and He cares about practical provision, but He also wants you to know you are already at home with Him.
In this waiting time you can commit your way to the Lord and put your trust in His Word rather than in the uncertainty of offers and closings. God planted His people like a vineyard to bring forth fruit, and He looks for that fruit even in seasons of delay. Staying conscious of His presence, bringing your requests to Him in prayer, and offering Him praise even while you wait, keeps your heart tender toward Him. He does not force a relationship, He invites a loving one, and He hears when His children seek His face and acknowledge their need of Him.
