The prayer that is raised for this dear friend is a sweet savor, for it is a prayer of trust, trust in the Lord to keep her safe. This is well, for we are not to trust in the surgeon's knife, nor in the medicine, nor even in our own feelings of hope, but in Him who holds all power in His hand. If you say, "I will trust when I see the recovery," that is no trust at all; that is sight. Trust begins where certainty of the flesh ends. They that trust in Him shall not be ashamed, even if they are made to walk before the healing comes. The healing power of Christ is not a reward for feeling strong, but a gift for those who rest on His bare word. He is able to save all who trust Him; He could be trusted with a million souls, and shall He not carry your friend through this trial?
There is abundant healing power in Jesus Christ, even in the least things about Him, the very leaves of that Tree of Life are for the healing of the nations. The surgeon's work is but a leaf; the quiet care of nurses, another leaf; the prayers of the saints, yet more leaves from that same Tree. But the lifeblood of it all is Christ Himself, the great Conduit Head from which all healing streams flow. Often, bodily sickness is the door through which the Great Physician enters to deal with the soul. Healing and forgiveness are placed in happy conjunction. When He healed the palsied man, He spoke pardon first, for the root of all misery is sin, and the first and greatest healing is the washing away of iniquity. This is the gospel's healing power: power to forgive sin.
Do not marvel if recovery should be slow, or if the flesh must pass through deep waters. The promise is, "I will strengthen them in the Lord." Strength is often perfected in weakness. Wonder not, then, if the friend now laid low must learn to trust as she sinks, that she may swim. Trust Him though you feel death's shadow; trust Him who was pierced, whose heart was smitten for us. He will not let you go. Healing must come before serving, and often Christ comes to the sickbed, takes the sufferer by the hand, and lifts her up. There is a contact, a union, established in that hour of pain which no ease could ever give. The Sun of Righteousness arises with healing in His wings, and the faces of those made fresh by His mercy shall bear the mark of His work for eternity.
You need an infinite Friend to keep you in safety, and such a Friend is found in God our Savior. He is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless with exceeding joy. Now unto Him who is able to do this be all trust committed. Let the cry go up, "Jesus! Master! Save me, heal me with a word," and He will hear. The desire to minister arises out of healing, and after this trial, this dear one shall rise to wait upon the Lord with new gratitude, walking up and down in His name as happy as the birds of summer. God bless you and her. Amen.
