We are so encouraged that you have shared Romans 8:31, What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

This is a powerful truth and we rejoice with you in it. In context, this verse comes after the great promises that God works all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose, Romans 8:28, and that He did not spare His own Son but delivered Him up for us all, Romans 8:32. So when we ask who can be against us, the answer is no one can ultimately prevail against those who are in Christ, because our justification, our adoption, and our future glory are secured by God Himself. As it is written, For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord, Romans 8:38-39.

We also want to gently remind you that this promise that God is for us is only true for those who have come to God through Jesus Christ. It is not a general hope for everyone apart from Him. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me, John 14:6. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. If we have not yet trusted in Jesus, we are still separated from God by our sin, but God demonstrates His love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us, Romans 5:8. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved, Romans 10:9. We encourage you to rest fully in that finished work.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son. We thank You that You are for us, not because of our own goodness, but because of the blood of Jesus shed for us. We thank You that because You are for us, no accusation, no condemnation, and no enemy can separate us from Your love. We ask that You help our dear friend to walk in the confidence of this truth today, to not fear what man or circumstance may bring, for You have said, Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness, Isaiah 41:10. Fill them with peace, strengthen their faith, and remind them daily that You who began a good work will complete it. Help them to abide in Christ and to live in a way that honors You. This precious word from Romans is a well of comfort for every tried believer. What shall we say in response to these things, if God is for us, who can be against us. The apostle does not ask us to find assurance within ourselves, for as I get my faith out of Christ, so I must get my assurance out of Christ. The virtual means of my faith is Christ Himself and the virtual means of my assurance must be the same. As I think of what He did for me, I believe in Him.

You have heard the Word of Truth, the Gospel of your salvation, and that Gospel tells you not to trust your own hands or your own heart, but to trust the bleeding hands which have opened the gates of Heaven for the very chief of sinners, and the streaming side out of which there gushes blood and water to cleanse both the guilt and the power of sin. Not to trust God's own Son, the Mighty God, the Redeemer of Men, is the greatest folly, but to trust Him is to find that God is indeed for you.

And if God is for you, His purpose cannot be broken. He is of one mind and none can turn Him. There is no enchantment against Jacob, no divination against Israel. The prayers of the wicked against you are an abomination to the Lord, and no revengeful prayer shall change the purpose of His love. The calamities of earth, the malice of hell, and all the terrible catastrophes of time are but slaves compelled to tug the galley of the divine purpose across the sea of time. If He is for you in the Covenant of Grace, made of His own free love according to the good pleasure of His will and sealed by the blood of His dear Son upon the Cross, then He remembers that Covenant for you. He hears the feeble cries of His children and remembers with whom He made it, and the great heart of God is moved to pity because of the death of His Son.

Do not think that your sin has been hidden from Him, for His knowledge is complete and baffles all evasion, and is the knowledge of a holy Being. Yet for His people there is this mercy, that He remembers their sin no more. He imputes not their iniquities to them and does not treasure them up against a day of wrath. The very existence of a Church, of a Gospel ministry, of Baptism and the Lord's Supper, are promises and prophecies that remission of sin is real and is known among God's people at this day. Sin can still be put away through Jesus Christ alone.

Therefore rest not in feeling, but in Christ. Hear the Gospel, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall know that if God is for you, none can finally be against you. May the Lord give you a teachable spirit to sit under His Word, to observe His works and His dealings with others, and to learn in the school of Christ that He who has begun a good work will perfect it. May you be kept in the full assurance of faith, triumphing not in yourself but in Him who loved you and gave Himself for you.
