Your cry for the restoration of your marriage and the reclaiming of faith has been heard, and it is a blessed thing, this faith of yours, not its littleness but its faith. Little faith requires to be tenderly handled and then it will be seen to be a precious thing, for the least faith in Jesus is the gift of God and is like precious faith though it is not like strong faith. If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you can do wonders, and that you still stand and still pray and still entertain hope in Christ proves that your faith is true faith, born from above and belonging to the family of the saved.
We will intercede for you and for your husband as you have asked. Our Savior said to Peter, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat, but I have prayed for you, that your faith fail not. There is the vital point. As long as faith is safe, the man is safe, for faith is the root of divine grace and if this fails, courage fails, patience fails, hope fails. We will pray that the Lord will hold His shield over your husband's faith, that the scales would be removed from his eyes and ears, that his heart which has grown hard would be made soft, and that he would receive that look of Christ which Peter received, a look altogether between the Lord and the soul, which broke his heart into a thousand pieces with grief that he should have been false to such a Friend, and wrought in him a bitter, salutary, saving repentance without which there can be no restoration. For faith and repentance are twins born at the same time, and that faith which allows a man to think lightly of past sin is not the faith of God's elect. We pray he may be humbled to a full turn back to God and to the covenant he made before God when he took you in marriage, that he would see the real truth for what it is, that you are not his enemy, and that the lies he is believing about you and your union, which are fiery darts of the wicked one, would be quenched.
For we take above all the shield of faith, because faith preserves from all sorts of enemies. Does the dart refer to Satan, faith answers him. Does it refer to wicked men, faith resists them. Does it refer to temptation to strong drink and to despair, faith can overcome that. There is no temptation that can assail a believer but faith can certainly supply an antidote, and that sanctifying faith which saves the soul makes a man say, Lord, thou hast forgiven me my sins, I will sin no more. We will pray that your husband may find that sobriety and marriage and true happiness are not contrary things, but may be held together in Christ, who gives power to live soberly and righteously in this present world.
And be assured that with God there is perfect restoration. If a sinner will come to God by prayer, with faith in Jesus Christ, God will receive him and he shall be as though he had never fallen through his sin. What a wonderful faith this is, to say, though I am black as hell, yet if Thou but purge me with the sacrificial blood of Jesus Christ, I shall be clean, wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. He is the God of peace and He has on His part prepared everything that is necessary for a perfect reconciliation, for God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them, and has committed unto us the word of reconciliation. This is the reconciliation we first need with God, and out of that peace with God, He can work peace in the home. Marriage is His own covenant, the lifelong union of one man and one woman, and He delights to heal and to bind up what sin has torn.
For you, dear soul standing in this harrowing season, we pray that you may be blessed with endurance, and that as you reclaim and grow your faith, God would grow you in wisdom and discernment. Above all, take the shield of faith, and watch in all things, but especially guard your faith. Faith laughs at tribulation from whatever source it may come, and all things are possible to him that believes. Do not cast away your confidence. Little faith shall be tenderly commended by Him who looks at it as jewelers do at some famous stone worth more than they can tell. He will not despise your trembling prayer. Continue to drop down into His arms, for the essence of faith lies there, and He who has begun a good work will perfect it.
We join our prayers with yours, that God would rebuke every lie from the pit, that He would grant your husband repentance unto life, that He would keep your feet from slipping, and that in His own time and by His own power He would bring restoration of faith and reconciliation of your marriage, to the praise of His grace.
