Repentance

Dear Lord, please forgive me. I’m asking you now to help me and my ### and help us stop fighting. Dear Lord, if it be possible, help me to stop fighting with her in honor her even if that means walking away so we don’t fight anymore in Jesus name amen.

We join you in this prayer of repentance and we thank God for your humble heart that seeks His forgiveness and His help to bring peace where there has been strife.

The Lord delights in a contrite heart and He promises that If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9. We also remember that if we truly repent we turn away from what grieves Him and walk in a new direction by His grace, for godly sorrow works repentance to salvation. 2 Cor 7:10.

We hear your desire to stop fighting and to honor this woman God has placed in your life. This is pleasing to Him. Fighting, harsh words, and unresolved anger do not reflect the love Christ calls us to. We are called to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. Eph 4:32. And we are instructed So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. James 1:19-20. A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Prov 15:1.

Your prayer to honor her even if it means walking away to avoid fighting shows a desire for self control and peace, and that wisdom can be godly. There are times when stepping away for a moment to cool down, to pray, and to keep from sinning in anger is the right and loving thing to do, as it is written Be angry, and do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your wrath, and do not give place to the devil. Eph 4:26-27. Walking away for a time to seek peace is not the same as abandoning love or commitment. If this woman is your wife, God calls you to a lifelong covenant and to love her as Christ loved the church and to live with her in understanding and honor, so we would encourage you not to walk away from the marriage itself but to walk away from the argument itself, to pray, and then to return with gentleness to pursue reconciliation and unity. If she is not yet your wife but a woman you are courting with marriage in mind, then honoring her means pursuing purity, patience, and a Christ centered courtship that seeks a godly marriage between a man and a woman, or if the relationship continually leads to strife and dishonor, seeking God's will about whether stepping back is needed to honor her and to honor Him.

We encourage you to put on therefore, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance, bearing with one another, and forgiving each other. Col 3:12-13. Love is patient and is kind, love does not envy, love does not brag, is not proud, does not behave itself inappropriately, does not seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil. 1 Cor 13:4-5.

We pray together with you now.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before Your throne of grace and we thank You for this repentant heart. Lord, we confess our sins before You and we thank You that through the blood of Jesus we are forgiven and cleansed. Help our brother to walk in that forgiveness and to extend that same forgiveness and grace. Lord, we ask You to set a guard over his mouth and over his heart, that he may be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. Give him Your wisdom to know when to speak with gentleness and when to step away quietly to pray rather than to fight. Teach him how to honor this woman as Your daughter, to speak to her with kindness, patience, and respect, and to love her with a pure and selfless love. Heal any wounds that fighting has caused between them, soften both hearts, and let Your peace rule in their relationship. If it is Your will for them to continue together, draw them closer to You and to each other in unity, and if they are not married, guide them toward a godly marriage if that is Your will, or give them clarity and strength to honor You in whatever future You have for them. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit so that he may bear the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Gal 5:22-23. We ask all this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our only Savior and mediator, amen.

Thank you for sharing this prayer so openly. We can hear both your sorrow for the fighting and your sincere desire to honor your wife, even at cost to yourself. That willingness matters to God and it is a good place to start.

Wanting to stop the cycle is different from having the feelings instantly change. You can make a clear decision to treat her as valuable and to step back from retaliation even while hurt and anger are still cooling. The deeper calm often comes more slowly as you practice that decision over time.

One practical help when tension rises is to agree together, in a calm moment, on a simple way to pause. It could be a word or phrase that means we need to stop, pray separately for twenty or thirty minutes, and then come back to talk when you are both calmer. Stepping away briefly to keep honor is not the same as walking away from the marriage, and if you are considering a longer separation, we encourage you to seek a trusted pastor or counselor together first so you have wise support.

Father, we thank You for this brother's repentant heart. Please forgive him as he asks, give him and his wife grace to hear each other, and teach them how to pause and speak with kindness. Grant them wisdom, self control and a path forward that honors You. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your cry for mercy is one which God delights to hear, for there is forgiveness with Him that He may be feared. Whatever your sins have been, there is forgiveness, and that forgiveness is to be found only in Jesus Christ, through His blood shed for the unjust that He might bring us to God. It is not a partial forgiveness, nor a forgiveness for a season, but a complete and eternal forgiveness for all who come to Him with a penitent heart and trembling desire to be forgiven. If you are the chief of sinners, there is forgiveness even for you, and it is to be had now, at this moment, as you look out of self to Christ and to Christ only.

You do well to ask not only for forgiveness but for repentance, and here you must weigh your repentance with great care. There is a carnal repentance which is of the flesh, a passing regret that fears judgment but does not glorify God. True repentance is the work of the Holy Spirit in the renewed heart. It gives God glory, it stands at the Cross and sees sin forgiven and then grieves more deeply that it laid such anguish upon the Lord. It is inseparable from faith, for the repentance that ejects sin as an evil tenant is joined to the faith which admits Christ to be the sole master of the heart. You may know whether your repentance is that repentance unto life by these tests, whether it yields works meet for repentance, whether it is practical and whether it lasts. Repentance lives as long as faith lives. It is not a bitter fit that passes in a night, but a sweet and abiding companion that keeps company with the soul all the way to the gates of pearl.

You pray that you may stop fighting and learn to honor her, even if that means walking away so that you do not fight anymore. This desire to honor and to make peace is itself a fruit that true repentance should bring forth. Having been forgiven so much, we are called to forgive even as we have been forgiven, and to act worthy of the privileges we have received as children of God. To honor another is not merely to avoid strife with words, but to seek her good before God in purity and in peace.

Therefore consider what honoring truly requires in the sight of God. If you are not joined together in the lifelong covenant of marriage as one man and one woman, then honoring her cannot mean living together as though you were married, nor sharing that which belongs only within that covenant. True love does not ask God to bless what His Word calls sin, but asks for grace to do what is holy. Sometimes the most honoring and most loving course is to establish godly boundaries, to step back from temptation and from contention, to pursue chastity and peace, and to seek counsel rather than to press on in a way that breeds quarreling and dishonor.

Bring this whole matter before the Lord in this way. Ask Him to search your heart and to grant you that godly repentance which needs not to be repented of, a repentance that turns from all sin because of love to Him who died for you. Ask Him to teach you to be slow to wrath, quick to forgive, and firm in holiness. If marriage is not your present standing before God, ask for strength to walk in purity, whether that means pursuing marriage in the Lord in due season and by godly counsel, or walking apart for a time that you may both be preserved from sin and from strife.

I will pray with you to that end. May the Lord grant you true repentance and faith in Jesus Christ alone for forgiveness, may He cleanse you and keep you, may He give you a gentle and quiet spirit, wisdom to honor her as one made in His image, grace to forgive as you have been forgiven, and courage to do what is right and pure, even when it costs you, that God may be glorified in all things. Seek the face of Christ daily in the Word, walk in the light, and seek the help of a faithful pastor who can know your case and guide you in the way of holiness and peace.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your desire to seek forgiveness and to stop the cycle of fighting is a humble and good step before God, and we join you in bringing it to Him.

Scripture teaches that repentance is not closed to us. There is no second baptism, but there is true repentance, and it has great power to set free from the burden of sin when we come with a contrite and humbled heart. God Himself gives that kind of heart, one that is sober and awestruck before Him, full of compunction and ready to turn from sin. That is what He desires from us more than anything else, and it is also what we most need in the midst of conflict.

True repentance is more than tears or feeling sorry in the moment. It shows itself in turning away and bearing fruit, in cutting out the root so that the bad fruit does not return. Every conflict has a root, often in pride, selfishness, envy or wanting our own way. To find peace, we must ask God to show us that root in ourselves and to help us cut it away, learning to despise vainglory and to seek the honor that comes from Him.

You prayed about honoring her even if that means walking away so you do not fight anymore. That willingness to step back from quarreling is wise. Scripture instructs us not to rush into conflicts but to deprecate them, to pursue peace and to show nobleness of spirit by being quiet and self controlled when strife is near. Sometimes the most loving and honoring choice is to create space, to cool anger, and to refuse to let a disagreement become sin.

Honoring her as God intends also means honoring Him in how you relate to one another. God has given marriage as a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and He has reserved sexual intimacy and living together for within that covenant. Whether you are married or not, honoring her means treating her with purity, respect, and self control, and not using closeness outside of His design. If you are not married, walking away from living as married and choosing holiness is part of true repentance. If you are married, honoring her means faithful, patient, covenant love that seeks her good above winning an argument.

We pray with you now in the name of Jesus Christ, through whom alone forgiveness and salvation come:

Lord, forgive us for our sins and for the ways we have contributed to strife. Grant a contrite and humble heart and lead into true repentance that turns from sin and bears fruit. Wash away sin through the blood of Christ and form Christ within us again. Teach us to cut out the root of conflict, to put away pride and selfishness, and to walk in soberness and self control. Give wisdom to know when to speak and when to step away in order to keep peace, and give strength to honor one another in purity and in love according to Your word. Lead both lives into holiness and into Your perfect will. Amen.

We encourage you to continue in prayer, to confess sin honestly to God, to turn from what displeases Him, to be in the Word daily, and to seek wise and trusted pastoral counsel who can know your situation more fully and walk with you toward peace and holiness.
