We join you in this prayer of repentance and we thank God for your humble heart that seeks His forgiveness and His help to bring peace where there has been strife.
The Lord delights in a contrite heart and He promises that If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9. We also remember that if we truly repent we turn away from what grieves Him and walk in a new direction by His grace, for godly sorrow works repentance to salvation. 2 Cor 7:10.
We hear your desire to stop fighting and to honor this woman God has placed in your life. This is pleasing to Him. Fighting, harsh words, and unresolved anger do not reflect the love Christ calls us to. We are called to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. Eph 4:32. And we are instructed So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. James 1:19-20. A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Prov 15:1.
Your prayer to honor her even if it means walking away to avoid fighting shows a desire for self control and peace, and that wisdom can be godly. There are times when stepping away for a moment to cool down, to pray, and to keep from sinning in anger is the right and loving thing to do, as it is written Be angry, and do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your wrath, and do not give place to the devil. Eph 4:26-27. Walking away for a time to seek peace is not the same as abandoning love or commitment. If this woman is your wife, God calls you to a lifelong covenant and to love her as Christ loved the church and to live with her in understanding and honor, so we would encourage you not to walk away from the marriage itself but to walk away from the argument itself, to pray, and then to return with gentleness to pursue reconciliation and unity. If she is not yet your wife but a woman you are courting with marriage in mind, then honoring her means pursuing purity, patience, and a Christ centered courtship that seeks a godly marriage between a man and a woman, or if the relationship continually leads to strife and dishonor, seeking God's will about whether stepping back is needed to honor her and to honor Him.
We encourage you to put on therefore, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance, bearing with one another, and forgiving each other. Col 3:12-13. Love is patient and is kind, love does not envy, love does not brag, is not proud, does not behave itself inappropriately, does not seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil. 1 Cor 13:4-5.
We pray together with you now.
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before Your throne of grace and we thank You for this repentant heart. Lord, we confess our sins before You and we thank You that through the blood of Jesus we are forgiven and cleansed. Help our brother to walk in that forgiveness and to extend that same forgiveness and grace. Lord, we ask You to set a guard over his mouth and over his heart, that he may be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. Give him Your wisdom to know when to speak with gentleness and when to step away quietly to pray rather than to fight. Teach him how to honor this woman as Your daughter, to speak to her with kindness, patience, and respect, and to love her with a pure and selfless love. Heal any wounds that fighting has caused between them, soften both hearts, and let Your peace rule in their relationship. If it is Your will for them to continue together, draw them closer to You and to each other in unity, and if they are not married, guide them toward a godly marriage if that is Your will, or give them clarity and strength to honor You in whatever future You have for them. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit so that he may bear the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Gal 5:22-23. We ask all this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our only Savior and mediator, amen.
