Repentance

Your honest prayer for forgiveness is heard by God, and your desire to repent and to honor her instead of fighting is a good and right desire.

God does not want a distant or ritual relationship with you where you simply try to follow rules to earn His favor. He wants a close, loving relationship as a Father with His child. Jesus taught us to pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, because He wants you to know Him in that intimate way, to know how much He loves you and to love Him in return. When that relationship with God is put right, every other relationship begins to come into balance. The first commandments concern your relationship with God because that is primary. When your walk with Him is right, your relationships with others have a way of falling into order. When it is not right, you can trace the strain in other relationships back to that root.

Part of coming close to God is understanding true repentance. There is a difference between worldly sorrow and godly sorrow. Worldly sorrow simply feels bad about the consequences, but godly sorrow leads to a real change. The Scripture says godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and is not to be regretted. True repentance means to turn and to change direction, to not continue in the same pattern. Your prayer shows that godly sorrow, a willingness to stop the fighting and to choose a different way, even if that means stepping away for a time so that anger does not rule.

That change is possible because of what Jesus has done. Forgiveness with God is not based on reflection alone or on trying harder. God established that atonement is made through blood, and Jesus shed His blood to provide complete forgiveness and cleansing. He not only forgives your sin, He separates it from you and gives you power over it. When we talk about forgiveness in human terms we often say we forgive but we do not forget. God's forgiveness is complete. When you turn to Him through Jesus Christ, who alone is the way of salvation, He washes you, cleanses you, and remembers your sins no more. Receive that forgiveness fully, and then learn to forgive as you have been forgiven, following God's own example.

Your relationship with the Lord will then shape how you treat her. Scripture shows that our walk with Jesus should make every other relationship better. It teaches us to be of one mind, to have compassion for one another, to love as brothers and sisters, to be tenderhearted and courteous, not returning evil for evil or insult for insult. Honoring her means choosing that way. It means refusing to use harsh words, refusing to repay hurt with hurt, and choosing self control. Sometimes honoring another person does mean creating distance for a season so that you do not fall back into fighting. Walking away from a heated moment or from a pattern that leads to sin is not unkind, it is an act of love and respect that protects both of you and keeps you from sowing to the flesh and reaping its consequences.

God's design for honoring a woman is also clear. Marriage is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and sexual intimacy and living together belong within that covenant. If you are in a relationship that is outside of that design, honoring her before God includes pursuing purity, respecting boundaries, and seeking His will for what the relationship should be, rather than asking Him to bless what does not reflect His plan. Loving God first and loving your neighbor as yourself fulfills what God requires in both directions.

Fruit in your life will be the natural result of that living relationship with Christ. You do not produce change by straining under a legal burden, but by abiding in Him in the newness of life through the Spirit, and the fruit follows.

Pray with confidence to your Father. Ask Him to forgive you through Jesus, to fill you with His Spirit, to teach you to walk in love, and to give you wisdom to know when to speak, when to be silent, and when to step away so that you do not sin in anger. Ask Him to help you show courtesy and compassion, and to guide both of you into what is holy and good. He is faithful to hear, to forgive, to cleanse, and to help you walk in a new way.
