We hear your deep concern for your friend, and we join you in lifting him before the Lord with heavy hearts. The bondage of excessive drinking is a serious matter, for it not only harms the body, a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), but also clouds the mind, weakens the spirit, and can lead to devastating consequences for relationships and loved ones. Scripture warns us, "Do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18 WEB). Your friend is walking a dangerous path, and we must pray fervently for his deliverance.
First, we rebuke the spirit of addiction in Jesus’ name. This is not merely a struggle with alcohol but a spiritual battle, for "our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places" (Ephesians 6:12 WEB). We declare that no weapon formed against your friend shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17), and we command every chain of bondage to be broken in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.
We also pray for conviction to pierce his heart. May the Holy Spirit move powerfully, revealing the destruction this habit brings, not only to his own life but to those who love him. "The heart of the righteous weighs answers, but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil" (Proverbs 15:28 WEB). Let him see the truth: that his choices affect more than himself. If he continues down this path, we ask that God would intervene supernaturally to prevent harm to others, for the Lord is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1).
Yet we must also speak truth in love. If your friend has not surrendered his life to Christ, this is the first and most critical step. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6 WEB). Without Christ, there is no lasting victory over sin. We pray that he would repent, turn from this destructive habit, and place his faith in Jesus alone for salvation and transformation. "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17 WEB).
We also encourage you, as his friend, to speak boldly and lovingly into his life. "Faithful are the wounds of a friend; although the kisses of an enemy are profuse" (Proverbs 27:6 WEB). Do not enable his behavior, but stand firm in truth, pointing him to Christ and to biblical accountability. Suggest godly resources, Christian counselors, recovery programs rooted in Scripture, or a local church that can walk alongside him in this battle.
Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts burdened for our brother. Lord, You see the chains that bind him, the lies he believes, and the harm he is bringing upon himself and others. We ask that You would shatter the stronghold of addiction in his life. Break the cycle of bondage, Lord, and replace it with a hunger for righteousness. Open his eyes to the destruction of his choices and soften his heart to receive Your truth.
We declare that Your power is greater than any habit, any temptation, any spirit of darkness. In the name of Jesus, we command every chain to be loosed, every lie to be exposed, and every stronghold to be torn down. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit, that he may walk in freedom and purpose. Surround him with godly influences, believers who will encourage him, hold him accountable, and point him to Your Word.
If he does not yet know You, Father, we pray for his salvation. Draw him to Yourself, Lord. Let him experience the love and grace that only You can provide. May he turn from his sin, surrender his life to Christ, and find true deliverance in You alone.
Protect those around him, Lord. If he refuses to change, intervene in ways that prevent harm to others. Soften hearts, mend relationships, and bring restoration where there has been brokenness. Give him a godly sorrow that leads to repentance, not a worldly sorrow that leads to death (2 Corinthians 7:10).
We trust in Your faithfulness, Lord. You are the God who sets the captives free, who heals the brokenhearted, and who restores what has been lost. We believe that You are able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20). May Your will be done in his life, and may Your name be glorified.
In the mighty and matchless name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
