Relief from harmful habits

You have done well to pray for your friend, but do not let your prayer become a cloak for inaction. The Lords delay in striking him down is not weakness; it is an opportunity for amendment. If the mere postponement of vengeance seems a comfort to him, far greater is the deliverance from the pit he digs for himself. Let him make full use of this patience. For none of Gods commands are burdensomeneither to put away the cup nor to consider the harm he does to his own soul and to those around him. Even Manasseh, who filled Jerusalem with blood and brought abominations into the temple, washed away his countless pollutions. How? By repentance and a changed heart.

But mark this carefully: not every sorrow is repentance. The drunkard may weep when his head throbs or his purse empties, yet return to the wine jar the next day. That is not the sorrow that leads to salvation. Esau sought the blessing with tears, yet found no place of repentance, because his grief was not born of a true turning from his malice. Let your friend examine himself: Is he truly willing to sever the sin, or does he merely lament its consequences while clinging to its cause? Godly sorrow works a repentance that brings no regret, a cleansing that transforms the whole man.

Therefore, while you pray, go also to him. Instruct him with meekness, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will. Do not quarrel over excuses or genealogies of blame; speak plainly of the wound and the Physician. The Church is a spiritual bath, able to wipe away every stain of the soul if he will truly repent. But if, after you have warned him once and again, he remains stubborn and determined to persist, then know that he is self-condemned. You cannot rescue a man who loves his chains more than his freedom.

Yet take heart. No depth of wickedness is beyond the reach of true repentance. Christ can be formed in him again. Only let him lay hold of itnot with a passing sob, but with a resolve to walk soberly, to make restitution for harm, and to seek the fellowship of those who will hold him accountable. And you, continue in fervent prayer, but let your prayers be joined to faithful action. For the soul that neglects to warn his brother shares in the ruin.

How heavy it is to watch someone you care about surrender to a bottle until his senses are nearly gone. You are right to bring this to the Lord, and you are right to name the double harm: the damage he does to his own body and the way his behavior can wound others. The physical toll is real. Over time, alcohol overworks the liver, attacks the nervous system, and destroys brain cells. A man who drinks to the point of passing out is not exercising liberty; he is being mastered by something that quietly steals his health and his clarity.

Yet the deeper crisis is spiritual and relational. Scripture calls us to a different path, one where we look not only at our own needs but at the needs of those around us. Your friend’s drinking has likely become a fortress of self, a way of numbing pain or escaping responsibility, but it leaves a wake of broken trust and fear in the people who love him. When someone is caught in this cycle, the Lord often opens his eyes through a combination of consequences and the faithful, loving words of another. Continue to pray that God will grant him a moment of clear seeing, where he recognizes that his choices are not just his own, they ripple out and hurt others.

If you have an opportunity to speak to him, do it with a spirit of gentleness and humility, not lording it over him but esteeming him higher than yourself. You might help him see that genuine freedom is not doing whatever we want, but being freed from the tyranny of habits that enslave. The gospel calls us to walk in love, always asking how our actions affect the brothers and sisters around us. If a certain food or drink causes a fellow believer to stumble, we have the right to refuse it; how much more when the one stumbling is our own soul? Pray that the Lord will grant him repentance and a new vision of the servant-hearted life Jesus modeled. And keep praying that, until he responds, the Lord would shield others from the harm his choices inflict.

We want to thank you for the privilege of standing in prayer with you for your friend. It has been heavy on our hearts to lift him before the Lord, asking for His mercy and intervention in breaking the chains of this harmful habit. We have prayed earnestly that the Holy Spirit would convict his heart, open his eyes to the danger he is in, and draw him into a place of repentance and healing. We’ve also asked the Lord to place a hedge of protection around him and those he may come into contact with, that no harm would come to anyone as a result of his struggle.

If the Lord has moved in this situation—if your friend has taken steps away from this bondage or if you’ve seen even the smallest glimmer of change—we would be overjoyed to hear a praise report. Your testimony could be an encouragement to so many others walking similar paths. But if the battle still rages and the answer hasn’t yet come, please don’t hesitate to post this request again. We are committed to continuing in prayer with you, believing that God is able to do exceedingly more than we could ask or imagine.

May the Lord strengthen you as you intercede for your friend, and may His peace guard your heart as you trust in His perfect timing. We ask all these things in the powerful name of Jesus. Amen.
