Relief from harmful habits

Disciple of Prayer
I pray that my friend will stop drinking to the point of almost passing out. May the Lord open his eyes to the harm he is doing to himself and others. May he not be allowed to hurt others around him if he chooses to not respond to the Lord’s calling.

We hear your deep concern for your friend, and we join you in lifting him before the Lord with heavy hearts. The bondage of excessive drinking is a serious matter, for it not only harms the body, a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), but also clouds the mind, weakens the spirit, and can lead to devastating consequences for relationships and loved ones. Scripture warns us, "Do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18 WEB). Your friend is walking a dangerous path, and we must pray fervently for his deliverance.

First, we rebuke the spirit of addiction in Jesus’ name. This is not merely a struggle with alcohol but a spiritual battle, for "our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places" (Ephesians 6:12 WEB). We declare that no weapon formed against your friend shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17), and we command every chain of bondage to be broken in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

We also pray for conviction to pierce his heart. May the Holy Spirit move powerfully, revealing the destruction this habit brings, not only to his own life but to those who love him. "The heart of the righteous weighs answers, but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil" (Proverbs 15:28 WEB). Let him see the truth: that his choices affect more than himself. If he continues down this path, we ask that God would intervene supernaturally to prevent harm to others, for the Lord is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1).

Yet we must also speak truth in love. If your friend has not surrendered his life to Christ, this is the first and most critical step. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6 WEB). Without Christ, there is no lasting victory over sin. We pray that he would repent, turn from this destructive habit, and place his faith in Jesus alone for salvation and transformation. "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17 WEB).

We also encourage you, as his friend, to speak boldly and lovingly into his life. "Faithful are the wounds of a friend; although the kisses of an enemy are profuse" (Proverbs 27:6 WEB). Do not enable his behavior, but stand firm in truth, pointing him to Christ and to biblical accountability. Suggest godly resources, Christian counselors, recovery programs rooted in Scripture, or a local church that can walk alongside him in this battle.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts burdened for our brother. Lord, You see the chains that bind him, the lies he believes, and the harm he is bringing upon himself and others. We ask that You would shatter the stronghold of addiction in his life. Break the cycle of bondage, Lord, and replace it with a hunger for righteousness. Open his eyes to the destruction of his choices and soften his heart to receive Your truth.

We declare that Your power is greater than any habit, any temptation, any spirit of darkness. In the name of Jesus, we command every chain to be loosed, every lie to be exposed, and every stronghold to be torn down. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit, that he may walk in freedom and purpose. Surround him with godly influences, believers who will encourage him, hold him accountable, and point him to Your Word.

If he does not yet know You, Father, we pray for his salvation. Draw him to Yourself, Lord. Let him experience the love and grace that only You can provide. May he turn from his sin, surrender his life to Christ, and find true deliverance in You alone.

Protect those around him, Lord. If he refuses to change, intervene in ways that prevent harm to others. Soften hearts, mend relationships, and bring restoration where there has been brokenness. Give him a godly sorrow that leads to repentance, not a worldly sorrow that leads to death (2 Corinthians 7:10).

We trust in Your faithfulness, Lord. You are the God who sets the captives free, who heals the brokenhearted, and who restores what has been lost. We believe that You are able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20). May Your will be done in his life, and may Your name be glorified.

In the mighty and matchless name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

We hear the heaviness in your words. It is deeply painful to watch someone you care about spiral in this way, the worry, the helplessness, the sorrow of seeing harm unfold. Thank you for bringing this before God and for loving your friend enough to stand in the gap.

We are reminded of a story we know, of a woman who hid her drinking from her church for years. She was terrified of being found out. When she finally risked telling the truth, she was met with love and applause, not because the drinking was okay, but because she was finally being honest. That moment of being received without shame cracked something open in her, and real recovery began. It makes us think: the very thing your friend may be most afraid of, being seen fully, having the harm acknowledged, could be the step that leads toward light. People struggling this way often feel a profound isolation, convinced that if others really knew, they would be rejected. Your faithful prayers and steady presence are already chipping away at that lie.

Your own role matters more than you may realize. When you have the chance to speak with him, a gentle, honest conversation, free of accusation but clear about what you see and fear, can be a profound act of love. We also want to mention that heavy, dangerous drinking often needs more than willpower or spiritual encouragement alone. There are Christian recovery groups, skilled counselors, and treatment programs that God uses to bring about lasting change. Part of loving him well may be quietly researching local resources now, so you know what to mention if a door opens.

Lord, we lift up this man to You. You see the harm he is causing himself and those around him. Protect him in his vulnerable moments. Open his eyes to the truth, not in shame but in a way that leads to hope. Give our friend wisdom and steady courage, and surround this man with people who will walk with him into healing. We ask for his freedom, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

The plea for your friend cleaves to the heart, yet let us weigh the matter not by mere sobriety of flesh but by the deeper work of the soul. A man may cease from his cups for a season and remain as unrenewed as a scrubbed and polished vessel that holds the same foul dregs. Judgment upon the body, the pounding head, the rebuke of friends, the fear of ruin, may produce a repentance that is of the flesh. This carnal sorrow washes and brushes and rouges the old nature, but leaves it fallen nature still. The heart is not renewed, the life is not regenerated, the mind is not changed. Such a repentance gives no glory to God and leads to no lasting deliverance from sin. It is but a temporary whitewashing of a sepulcher full of dead men’s bones.

True repentance, the gift of the Spirit, ejects sin as an evil tenant and admits Christ to be the sole master of the heart. It makes a man weep and abhor his past life because of the love of Christ which has pardoned it. This is the repentance unto life that does not merely sigh over the harm done, but turns with loathing from the sin itself, because it is committed against so holy, so good, so glorious a Being as the infinitely blessed God. Does your friend know anything of such a repentance, weighed in these scales? Or is he only sorry for consequences, while still clutching the poison to his breast?

Yet there is a Deliverance. The Lord brings forth His captives from the iron furnace with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. This deliverance comes not by might, nor by power, but by the Spirit of God. It is not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shows mercy. Your friend may feel as one held in a vice, unable to stir hand or foot to set himself free, and that is a hopeful sign if it drives him to despair of self. It is when the soul lies at Jabbok, full of fear and trembling, crying out for deliverance from what seems bloodthirsty, that it finds Esau falling upon its neck and kissing it. The clock of mercy strikes in Heaven the hour and moment of deliverance when the eternal purpose of Jehovah decrees it. God has found a ransom, a way of deliverance from the pit through the precious blood of Christ.

Pray, then, not only that his eyes be opened to the harm, but that he be given a repentance after a godly sort, a repentance that makes a rainbow with tears of grief for sin and glances of hope at the love of Christ and His great finished work. Repentance and remission are so joined together that wherever you find the one, you find the other. But let none mistake and put repenting into the place of Christ. The soul must look out of self to Christ and to Christ only. There is the fountain opened. There is the Mediator who delivers from the wrath to come. Urge your friend to flee to Him, for to be rid of drunkenness is a mercy, but to be rid of all sin at once through union with the Saviour is the grand thing. He alone can bring forth His people with silver and gold, making the very bonds that held them to vanish in the blaze of His unmerited favor.

Therefore, cry to the Lord for this work. No arrow of despair can pierce the shield of His faithfulness. He who stilled the stormy sea can speak peace to that troubled soul and snap the chains of iron habit. Only let your friend come as a beggar, with nothing in his hand, and take the deliverance as a free gift, that God may have all the glory.
