Your prayer for an unquenchable thirst for truth and righteousness is precious to the Lord and it reflects His own heart. God is a God of truth and justice and He desires righteousness and fairness to prevail. When truth has fallen and honest communication is lacking, He looks for intercessors to stand in the gap, and your willingness to pray in this way is part of what He uses. He is full of grace and compassion, and at the same time He is holy and just, and He is always looking for a reason to show mercy.
You are right to see that education and knowledge of the law cannot make a person righteous. Scripture is clear that we can have zeal without true knowledge, and try to establish our own righteousness while remaining ignorant of the righteousness that God gives. True righteousness is not earned by learning or by good works. It is a gift that God imputes to us through faith in Jesus Christ, who took the judgment for our sin upon Himself and became a curse for us on the cross so that we could be declared innocent before God. Apart from Him, no one can be righteous, and no one can fool God by outward appearance, because He knows the truth of every heart.
That is why your prayer from Psalm 51 is so fitting. God does not delight in outward sacrifice alone. What He desires and will not despise is a broken and contrite heart, a heart that sees itself honestly in the light of who He is, recognizes sin for what it is, and hates it enough to turn from it. When we truly see Him, we see ourselves as we are, and that sight creates a hunger and thirst for His righteousness. Jesus promised that those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled, and that a pure and undivided heart is the heart that will truly see God. Only He can create that thirst within a person and then satisfy it.
It is right to pray that those who are bound by lies would be set free by the truth, for Jesus said the truth shall set you free, and He Himself is the truth. Pray that God would teach them His way, lead them in His truth, and unite their hearts to fear His name. Pray that they would seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and acknowledge Him so that He can direct their paths. The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life and the fruit of righteousness through Jesus Christ, who offered Himself once for all as the perfect sin offering to cleanse us from all sin.
Continue to bring them before the Lord. Ask that His Spirit would convict them, soften their hearts, and grant them repentance and faith in Christ alone for salvation. Ask that He would cover and give peace and understanding to those who are already His, and that He would show mercy to those who are not yet His, drawing them to see their need and to receive the righteousness that comes only through Jesus. All of the Lord's paths are mercy and truth for those who keep His covenant, and His arm alone brings the salvation that no human system can provide. May the Lord answer according to His perfect will and bring forth righteousness and peace in this situation for His glory.
