Redeeming myself a

Your honest prayer about the strain at work is heard, and the desire for peace and renewed trust is a good one. God sees the tension you feel with your department head and He cares about how you walk through it with integrity and grace.

It is helpful to think carefully about the word redeem. In Scripture redemption is not something we do for ourselves. It means to buy back someone who is enslaved and cannot pay his own debt. We were slaves to sin and could not free ourselves with silver or gold or with good performance. The price of our redemption was the blood of Jesus shed on the cross when He gave His life for us. He became one of us so that as our kinsman He could pay what we could never pay. That price has been paid once and for all.

At the same time Scripture teaches that while the price is fully paid, our redemption is not yet fully complete. We have a redeemed spirit living in a body that still struggles and decays, and creation itself groans as it waits for that final day. Romans chapter 8 describes this waiting for the redemption of the body. God has given the Holy Spirit to us as a guarantee, a down payment that assures us He will finish what He has purchased. He sees the end from the beginning and speaks of your future with Christ as certain, and that is meant to comfort you while you wait.

Because God has reconciled us to Himself through Christ, not counting our sins against us when we trust in Jesus alone for salvation, He now calls us to live out reconciliation with others where we can. The world is full of conflict, and that conflict reaches into workplaces, but the gospel is good news of peace, first peace with God and then peace in our own hearts that can overflow to those around us.

So in your situation, rather than trying to redeem yourself, which only Jesus can do, you can seek what God does call you to do. Ask Him to remove any root of bitterness in your own heart and in the heart of your department head, and to replace it with fairness and understanding. Where you have fallen short, humbly own it and ask forgiveness. Where you have been wronged, choose forgiveness and do not hold resentment. Then commit your work to the Lord and do every task with excellence and honesty as unto Him, not to earn your worth but to reflect His character. Trust is often rebuilt slowly through consistent faithfulness, clear communication, and a gentle spirit.

Pray with confidence, knowing your prayers are precious to God and are like incense before His throne.

Father, we thank You that redemption is through the blood of Your Son and the forgiveness of sins, not through our own effort. We ask You to soften hearts in this workplace and to take away bitterness and misunderstanding. Grant wisdom, strength and focus to do each task well and with integrity. Open doors for honest conversation and for mutual respect to grow. Help this time of difficulty to become an opportunity for growth in Christlikeness. Guard this heart with Your peace and remind him that You have sealed him with Your Spirit until the day when redemption will be complete. In the name of Jesus we pray, amen.
