Beloved Servant
I have been trying to reconcile some estranged relationships in the past month or so and it has been a difficult process and I think God is now directing me to stop reaching out to these people. Please pray for me about this. Pray for me as I navigate how to once again distance myself from these people as I did before but in a godly way. These are people who have been abusive toward me throughout my life. Thank you.

We hear the heaviness in your request and we thank you for sharing it with us. We have been praying for you as you have sought to obey God in pursuing reconciliation, and we understand how difficult and painful this past month has been. It takes great courage and obedience to reach out to those who have hurt you, and it also takes great wisdom and discernment to recognize when the Lord is directing you to step back.

Scripture makes a distinction between forgiveness and reconciliation. We are commanded to forgive from the heart as Christ forgave us, as it is written in Ephesians 4:32, And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. Forgiveness is something we can offer freely, even when the other person does not repent. Reconciliation, however, requires repentance and trust to be rebuilt, and it is not always possible, especially when abuse has been present. Romans 12:18 teaches us, If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. That phrase if it is possible acknowledges that peace and restored relationship depends on both parties. We are also taught to guard our hearts and to be wise in our relationships, for Proverbs 4:23 says Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life, and Proverbs 22:24 says Don’t befriend a hot-tempered man, and don’t associate with one who harbors anger. Jesus Himself tells us to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves in Matthew 10:16. Choosing to distance yourself from those who have been abusive throughout your life is not unforgiveness, it can be a godly boundary that protects the heart and life God has given you.

We also notice that you spoke of God directing you, and we want to gently encourage you that it is only through Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father and can hear His voice clearly. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 reminds us, There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not already, we encourage you to bring every step of this journey to God in the name of Jesus, trusting in His death and resurrection for your salvation and for your daily access to grace and wisdom. It is in His name that we can pray with confidence and receive healing.

We pray together for you now. Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear one to Your throne of grace. You see the pain of these estranged relationships and the wounds from a lifetime of abuse. You are near to those who have a broken heart as Psalm 34:18 promises, and You heal the brokenhearted as Psalm 147:3 declares. Lord, we ask You to confirm Your direction and give clear wisdom, for James 1:5 says if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. Grant wisdom to know how to step back in a way that honors You, without bitterness or malice, but with grace and truth. Help our friend to forgive as You have forgiven, to release these people into Your hands, and to bless those who have caused hurt as You command in Matthew 5:44 to love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, while also maintaining healthy and holy boundaries. Fill this heart with Your peace that surpasses all understanding and heal every place that still hurts. Surround this dear one with godly counsel, supportive believers, and the comfort of Your Holy Spirit. Lead each step forward and let Your will be done. In the name of Jesus we pray, amen.

We encourage you as you navigate this godly distancing to do so with quiet firmness and love. This does not require a harsh announcement or an angry confrontation, but can be done by quietly ceasing to initiate contact, by not opening doors that invite further harm, and by committing these individuals to the Lord in prayer rather than pursuing further conversation. Ephesians 4:31 says Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice. So we encourage you to let go of any guilt for stepping back, and to refuse bitterness at the same time. Keep praying for them, but from a distance that is safe. Seek the covering of a trusted pastor or mature Christian counselor who can walk with you and help you discern boundaries. Trust that God sees your obedience, He honors your desire for peace, and He will be your protector and healer in this season.

We hear how heavy this past month has been for you. Reaching out again after a long estrangement takes real courage, and when those relationships have a history of abuse, it makes sense that the process has felt painful and confusing.

Your sense that God may be leading you to stop reaching out for now is worth honoring. Reconciliation at its best is a shared commitment to restore love and trust, and it cannot be carried by one person alone. When that mutual willingness is not there, choosing distance is not a failure of love. Boundaries are like property lines that help you take responsibility for what is yours to carry and protect your heart so you can remain free to give a clear yes and a clear no.

One step that often steadies this kind of season is to define, with one trusted pastor or counselor beside you, what godly distance will look like in practice. You might write down for each person what contact, if any, is wise, how you will respond if they reach out, and who you will call when guilt or pressure rises. Having another person help you hold those lines makes it easier to stay both kind and consistent.

You are not walking this alone and you have not missed your chance to honor God in how you relate to others.

Father, we lift our friend to You today. Grant wisdom for each decision, peace as they step back, and deep healing from what has been harmful. Surround them with safe and faithful community and remind them they are seen and held by You. In Jesus name, amen.

Praying that our Lord will lead you and guide you to people that treat you well and have a positive influence in your life.
Trying to maintain a relationship or having any contact with past or present abusers is giving them the opportunity to subject more abuse on you. Please, my friend, close the door to these abusers so they can no longer cause you pain; keeping them in your life will only bring you more grief and suffering. May our Lord bless you with new friends and acquaintances that treat you with respect and kindness… prayers in the name of Jesus.

Your burden has been heard with deep care and sorrow, and there is much wisdom and tenderness in what you have written. To have sought reconciliation at cost to yourself, and to have done so with a sincere desire to walk before the Lord, is itself a mark of grace. That the attempt has brought renewed difficulty, and that you now sense the Lord directing you to cease from reaching out, is not a failure of love but may be the very guidance for which you have prayed.

Know this, that reconciliation in its full sense requires more than the willingness of one heart. As it has been truly said, in order to reconciliation it is not enough that one party should be forgiving, the other must yield, too. If the aggrieved party should go all the way towards reconciliation while the other does not desire it, it may only encourage further evil. The Gospel shows us that God has in Christ made perfect provision for peace with Himself, and we receive that reconciliation by faith in Jesus, and then we joy in God. But between men, where there has been a pattern of abuse, a godly desire for peace must not be mistaken for a call to expose yourself again to harm.

To distance yourself in a godly way is not unchristian. It can be the most godly course. The Lord has set apart him that is godly for Himself, and one universal mark of the godly is that they pray unto Him. You do well to bring this very matter before Him in prayer, asking for wisdom to set boundaries with firmness and with grace, without bitterness, without revenge, and without uncleanness of spirit. A godly distance will be marked by forgiveness in the heart, for we forgive as we have been forgiven, and yet by a sober recognition that trust and restored fellowship cannot be built where there is no repentance and where abuse continues. Love can pray from afar, love can desire the true good and salvation of those who have harmed you, and love can also say, for this season I must not open the door to further wounding.

Pray then that the Lord would guard your heart from condemnation for stepping back, and from any root of anger that would harden into sin. Pray that He would give you counsel through faithful, godly people who know your story and can help you discern each step, and that He would hedge you about with His protection. What rest can there be while solemn vows are broken and the purest relationships are treated with despite, and while there is abuse, there cannot be peace in that fellowship. To seek peace does not require you to remain within reach of those who have used nearness to do harm.

Let us pray together for you.

O Lord our God, who has reconciled us to Yourself by Jesus Christ and not imputed our trespasses unto us, we thank You that we have peace with You through our Lord Jesus Christ, and that we may joy in You as those who have received the reconciliation. We bring before You this wounded and weary child of Yours who has sought to do what is right and has found the way hard. Grant clear discernment, we beseech You, to know when to speak and when to be silent, when to draw near and when to withdraw. Set a guard about this life, and let Your perfect love cast out fear. Heal the wounds of many years, quiet the troubled memories, and give grace to forgive as Christ has forgiven, while also giving courage to walk in holiness and safety. Teach what it is to be set apart for Yourself, to pray in every time of need, and to find that You will hear when Your people call upon You. Lead by Your Holy Spirit into that godly way which is both gentle and firm, that there may be purity, and honesty, and true peace. Keep this dear one close to Christ, and let the joy of being reconciled to You be a well of strength in days of loneliness. In the name of Jesus our Redeemer we ask it, Amen.

Be encouraged to remain under the care of wise and godly counsel in your church, to let others bear this burden with you, and to continue in prayer until the Lord makes your path plain. He who has begun a good work in you will not forsake you, and He is able to keep you in perfect peace as your mind is stayed upon Him.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
