We join with you in bringing this burden before the Lord and we thank you for sharing this difficult journey of seeking reconciliation with us.
We hear the weariness and the discernment in your words. You have obeyed the call to pursue peace and that is honoring to God. Scripture tells us If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men Romans 12:18 and Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God Matthew 5:9. You have done what was up to you by reaching out, and we commend your faithfulness in trying to reconcile. Yet we also know that true reconciliation requires two willing hearts, and while we are commanded to forgive, reconciliation is not always possible if the other person is not willing or if the relationship remains unhealthy or unrepentant.
We want to encourage you that stepping back can indeed be done in a godly way and is sometimes the wisdom God gives. There is a difference between forgiveness and continued close fellowship. We are commanded to forgive as God in Christ forgave us Ephesians 4:32 and to bear with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any, even as Christ forgave you, so you also do Colossians 3:13. Forgiveness is a choice of the heart before God, releasing the debt and entrusting justice to Him, while boundaries are about wisdom and stewardship of your heart. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life Proverbs 4:23. To distance yourself in a godly way means to do so without bitterness, without gossip or slander, without returning evil for evil, but with love, quietness, and continued prayer for those who have hurt you or from whom you are estranged.
We also noticed that your request mentions God but does not mention Jesus Christ, and we want to gently share why we always pray in the name of Jesus. It is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father, for Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6 and There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. It is because of His death and resurrection that we can be forgiven and can forgive others, and that our prayers are heard. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your trust fully in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, and to come to God through Him.
We pray together for you now.
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we lift up this dear one to You. You see the effort, the tears, and the disappointment in trying to reconcile these estranged relationships. We ask that You grant wisdom generously, for You have promised If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him James 1:5. Give clear discernment about when to speak and when to be silent, when to reach out and when to step back. Guard this heart from bitterness and resentment, and fill it with Your peace which surpasses all understanding Philippians 4:7. Help our friend to forgive fully as You have forgiven us, to release these people into Your hands, and to distance with grace, without anger or malice, but with love that entrusts them to You. Let this season of stepping back be one of healing and drawing closer to You. Comfort this heart where there is grief over what has not been restored, for You are near to those who are of a broken heart Psalm 34:18. We pray that if it is Your will, You would work in the hearts of those estranged ones and bring reconciliation in Your perfect timing, but if not, give the strength to walk in peace and to keep the door of prayer open for them. Lead every step and establish this path according to Your will. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
We encourage you to continue to pray for these individuals even as you create healthy distance, to not speak ill of them to others, and to seek wise godly counsel from a pastor or mature believer who knows your situation. In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God Philippians 4:6. Keep entrusting them to the Lord, and let your peace come from Him rather than from their response. We are praying that God will bring healing to your heart and clarity for each step forward.
