We hear your heart in this difficult season and we join with you in seeking the Lord's wisdom and peace as you navigate these estranged relationships. Your desire to reconcile and to do so in a godly way honors God, and your willingness to listen for His direction shows a humble spirit before Him.
Scripture calls us to pursue peace and reconciliation as far as it depends on us. Romans 12:18 says, If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. And Matthew 5:9 reminds us, Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. Yet reconciliation requires the willing hearts of both parties, and there are times when, after faithful and loving effort, the Lord leads us to step back, to shake the dust from our feet as Jesus instructed His disciples when they were not received in Matthew 10:14, and to entrust those people and that relationship to Him. That stepping back is not failure and it is not unloving, it can be an act of obedience and wisdom when done without bitterness, anger, or gossip.
We also hear that you want to distance yourself in a godly way, as you did before. We encourage you to guard your heart as you do this. Proverbs 4:23 says, Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life. To distance in a godly way means to continue to forgive, even while establishing boundaries. Colossians 3:13 says, Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any, even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. And Ephesians 4:31-32 says, Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. You can release them to God, pray for their good, and refuse to let resentment take root, while also accepting that continued pursuit may not be what God is asking of you in this season.
If you lack clarity, God promises wisdom to those who ask. James 1:5 says, But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. And Proverbs 3:5-6 says, Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths. We encourage you to continue to seek Him in prayer and in His Word, to seek counsel from mature believers, and to look for His peace to confirm His direction.
We notice your request mentions God but does not mention Jesus Christ, and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and peace with Him. John 14:6 says, Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 says, There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. It is by placing our faith in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection for our sins, that we are reconciled to God, and from that reconciliation we learn how to be reconciled to others or to release them with grace when reconciliation is not possible.
We pray together for you now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, and we lift up this dear one to You. We thank You for the heart that desires to obey You and to handle relationships in a way that pleases You. Lord, You see the effort that has been made toward reconciliation and the pain of estrangement. We ask that You grant clear wisdom and discernment to know when to reach out and when to step back. Give peace that surpasses understanding to confirm Your will. Help our friend to forgive fully as You have forgiven us, to release bitterness and hurt, and to set godly boundaries with love and humility. Guard the heart from loneliness, guilt, or condemnation, and fill it with Your comfort and presence. We pray that You would work in the hearts of those who are estranged as well, and if it is Your will, bring healing and restoration in Your perfect timing, but if not, help all to walk in Your grace. Let Your will be done in each of these relationships, and let our friend rest in trusting You. We ask all this in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.
