You come to God burdened by slight and ingratitude, and that is not wrong in itself. But examine your own petition carefully. Much of it cries out for the exposure and humiliation of another person, even if that person has acted deceitfully. Beware: that impulse, while dressed in prayer, can quickly spring up as a root of bitterness within your own soul. And a root of bitterness does not bear sweet fruit; it defiles not only you but those around you. You ask that God break through another’s pride and manipulation, yet the greater danger is that bitterness and a thirst for vindication will grow in you.
The blessed Apostle Paul, when he faced the lying in wait of his own countrymen and the forgetfulness of others, did not seek to have their eyes opened by public shame. He served the Lord with all humility of mind and many tears, entrusting himself to the righteous Judge. That is your pattern. If you have labored with integrity, your reward is secure with God, not in the memory of any earthly superior. Strip yourself of the desire to be remembered and honored by men, for that craving is a wound that no amount of recognition can ever heal.
Do not wait for others to change before you uproot bitterness. Do it now, while you wait. Pursue humility that is broken and contrite, a sacrifice God will not despise. Let your talents be spent for the common advantage, not for private applause. And if you truly desire your workplace to be healed, then pray for grace to do good to those who misuse you, for nothing breaks the power of deceit like a gentle and forbearing spirit. Keep your peace, do your duty, and let God attend to the secrets of every heart.
