Ps. 91

Thank you Heavenly Father for blessing us all with another day.

I pray Ps. 91:

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked. If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.””

We join you in thanking our Heavenly Father for the gift of another day and for the precious promises found in Psalm 91. We are encouraged by your desire to dwell in His shelter and to declare His faithfulness over your life and the lives of those you love.

We love how this psalm reminds us that true security is found not in our own strength but in abiding close to the Most High. Psalm 91:1 says He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91:2 says I will say of Yahweh, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust. When we make the Lord our dwelling, we can rest in His covering, His faithfulness as our shield, and His presence as our refuge from fear, pestilence and the schemes of the enemy. Psalm 91:11 says For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways. And the beautiful promise at the end, Psalm 91:14 says Because he has set his love on me, therefore I will deliver him. I will set him on high, because he has known my name. Psalm 91:15 says He will call on me, and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him, and honor him. Psalm 91:16 says I will satisfy him with long life, and show him my salvation.

We want to gently and lovingly point out that your prayer thanked the Heavenly Father but did not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We share this because scripture is clear that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only by His name that we are saved. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. And 1 Timothy 2:5 says For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. To truly dwell in the secret place and to know His name as Psalm 91:14 describes, we must know Jesus, believe that He died for our sins and that God raised Him from the dead, and confess Him as Lord. Romans 10:9 says that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. It is this relationship with Jesus that opens the door to the Father's shelter and assures us of the salvation promised in Psalm 91:16.

So we pray together with you now in the name of Jesus.

Father, we thank You together for Your mercy in giving us another day of life. We thank You that You are our refuge and our fortress, our God in whom we trust. We choose to dwell in Your secret place and to rest in the shadow of the Almighty. We ask that You cover us with Your feathers and that under Your wings we will find refuge, that Your faithfulness will be our shield. Guard us in all our ways and command Your angels concerning us. Help us to set our love on You and to know Your name more deeply through Jesus Christ. We call upon You now in the name of Jesus and ask that You answer us, be with us in trouble, deliver us and honor us, satisfy us with long life and show us Your salvation. Draw us closer to Jesus each day, that we may abide in You and walk in obedience to Your word. We ask all this according to Your will, in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.

We encourage you to continue to pray Psalm 91 daily, but to always pray it in the name of Jesus, abiding in Him through reading His word, trusting Him, and walking in His ways. As you do, you will experience more deeply the rest, protection and salvation He promises to those who love Him and call upon His name.

We were encouraged to see your thankfulness this morning. Beginning the day by saying thank you to the Father and by resting in Psalm 91 sets a steady tone for whatever the day holds.

What struck us is how you made that psalm your own prayer, speaking of God as refuge and shelter. That kind of thanksgiving does more than mark a moment, it reorients our hearts to remember we are not alone and that we are cared for. On ordinary days and on harder ones, returning to that place of gratitude can quiet us and keep our eyes on Him.

If it is helpful, you might keep this simple practice going. Keep Psalm 91 where you will see it in the morning and speak it aloud as a prayer again, or jot down one or two specific things you are grateful for each day alongside it. Over time that habit helps thankfulness become our first response.

Father, thank You for this new day and for being a refuge we can dwell in. We thank You for Your faithfulness and care over our friend. Keep drawing them close to You, give them rest under Your wings today, and show them more of Your salvation as they walk with You. In Jesus' name, amen.

It is a good and comely thing to begin the day with thanksgiving, and to take upon your lips the very words which the Holy Spirit has given for the comfort of the saints. You have done well to pray Psalm 91, for it is a Psalm full of honey for those who dwell where it speaks of dwelling.

To dwell in the shelter of the Most High is not to pay Him a passing visit, nor to repeat His promises with the mouth while the heart is far off. It is to abide in Christ, who is the true City of Refuge for the guilty soul. As the manslayer fled along the road where every signpost cried Refuge, so the sinner flies to Jesus and finds in Him a fortress not to be stormed, a covert from all the arrows that fly by day and all the terrors that stalk in darkness. He covers His people with His feathers, and under His wings they find not a pretended safety, but a real and everlasting security, for His faithfulness is shield and rampart.

Take heed that you trust Him and not your feelings about Him. Many say, I will trust Him when I feel more fit, or when I have attained some inward mark. That is to make a saviour of your own feelings. The wiser way is to say, Here is God's way of salvation through His crucified Son, and He has promised that if I trust that Son He will save me and make a new man of me. You are not to be healed first and then trust the Physician. You are to trust the Physician that you may be healed. Trust Him as you sink and you shall swim. Trust Him as you feel yourself dying and you shall live.

This Psalm promises that no harm shall overtake those who make the Lord their refuge, that He will command His angels concerning them, and that because they love Him and acknowledge His name He will rescue and honour them. These are great words, and they shall all be fulfilled to those who are in Christ Jesus. It may be that a thousand fall at your side, and that trouble still visits your tent in this world which lies under sin and death, yet for the soul that rests in Christ no disaster can separate it from His love, no plague can touch its eternal life, and at last He will show it His salvation and satisfy it with length of days in His own presence.

May the Lord keep you this day abiding in Him, not merely quoting the Psalm but living in the substance of it. May He teach you from your youth and through all your years to declare His wondrous works, and to prove that you cannot come to Christ and rest in Him and be disappointed. He will be with you in trouble, He will deliver you, and He will honour those who honour His Son.

Thank you for sharing this prayer and for beginning the day with thanksgiving to the Heavenly Father. That gratitude itself is pleasing to God when it comes from a humble heart.

Psalm 91 is a precious promise, and it speaks of more than reciting words. It speaks of dwelling in the shelter of the Most High and making the Lord your refuge. The psalm invites us to think about what we are singing and praying, to rest in God and to trust that he is our fortress and shield, not only in words but in how we live each day. To dwell with him is to abide in faith, to call upon his name and to walk with him in obedience.

True thanksgiving also goes together with confession. It is good to give thanks for another day, and it is also good to acknowledge our need for mercy, to confess our sins and to thank God that he has not dealt with us as our sins deserve but has provided salvation. That salvation is shown fully in Jesus Christ alone, in whom we have forgiveness and life, and in whom the final promise of the psalm is fulfilled, when God says with long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.

I pray with you that as you make the Lord your dwelling, you will know his covering and his peace, that you will not fear but will rest under his wings, and that he will guard you in all your ways according to his will. May he be with you in trouble, deliver you, honor you, and lead you to reflect his refuge to others who need shelter and help. May your thanksgiving today grow into deeper trust and quiet confidence in his faithfulness.

Thank you for sharing this prayer and for anchoring your heart in Psalm 91. It is a precious psalm to dwell in, and your thankfulness for another day is itself a beautiful expression of trust.

That word dwells is the key. It does not speak of a brief visit but of making your home in the shelter of the Most High, living under the shadow of the Almighty. Scripture presents God Himself as that shelter. He is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Because He is that refuge, we need not fear even when everything around us shakes, when waters roar or mountains seem to be moved. What matters is not the size of the trouble but the nearness and permanence of the One in whom we hide.

In the law God provided cities of refuge placed throughout the land so that no one was more than a short distance from safety, with signs at every crossroad pointing the way. If someone had caused death unintentionally, he could run to that city and be safe inside its borders, where he would be heard fairly and protected from the avenger. As long as he remained inside, he was secure, but if he left that place of safety he was no longer protected. That pattern points to what the Lord is for us now. Jesus Christ Himself is our refuge. We flee to Him, and our life is hidden with Christ in God. As long as we remain in Him, abiding in Him by faith, we are safe. That refuge is not for those who insist on continuing in willful, presumptuous sin, but for those who honestly turn to Him, acknowledge His name, and call upon Him for mercy.

Psalm 91 describes that security so tenderly. He covers you as a mother bird covers her young under her wings, a place of comfort and protection where you can trust. His faithfulness is your shield. Because you have made the Lord your dwelling, you need not fear the terror of night nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the sickness that stalks in darkness nor the destruction at midday. A thousand may fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you when you are abiding in Him.

The psalm also reminds you that He will give His angels charge over you to guard you in all your ways, so that you are upheld even in small stumbling places, and you will have strength to tread upon the lion and the cobra, to overcome the power of the enemy. And the Lord Himself speaks the final promise, because you love Him and acknowledge His name, He will rescue you and protect you, He will answer when you call, He will be with you in trouble, deliver you and honor you, satisfy you with long life and show you His salvation.

Trust is at the heart of all of this. It is better to put your trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man or in the strength of the flesh, which will always fail. Real trust is proven not only when things are easy and clear, but when you do not understand what God is doing and the path is dark. He allows that testing so your trust may bring praise to Him. He knows your situation, your limitations, and He loves you and will take care of you. So continue to commit your way to Him and trust also in Him, and He will bring it to pass.

May the Lord today keep you resting in that secret place, under His wings, trusting His Word, knowing He is your fortress and your God in whom you trust, present with you in every trouble and faithful to show you His salvation.
