Protection, safe travels

The prayer for safe travel is a fitting petition, yet we must always consider the greater journey of the soul. Do you not know that we are always on a journey, as those who eat the Passover with loins girded and shoes on our feet? Our citizenship is in Heaven, and every step we take in this strange country should be taken with a heart fixed on that destination. Do not let your mind be so fixed on the safety of the body that you neglect the readiness of your spirit. To be truly girded is the posture of a waking soul, and a waking soul trusts in God’s will whether the path seems smooth or filled with trial.

Consider how often we crave ease in our journeys, like a fevered man longing for a cool drink, seeing only the momentary comfort without regard for the whole. You have begun this drive with prayer, and that is good, but do not let your care be only for the road. Let this travel be as the byework of a spiritual purpose. The Apostles did not journey for pleasure; their travels were actively employed, and they did nothing without a purpose. Use this time not for idle thought but for earnest prayer and the bridling of the tongue from unseasonable speech. This very trip, when given to God, can become a means to estrange you from worldly concerns, as if you had taken a journey to visit a holy man in the desert.

You pray for protection, and so you should, for we are ever dependent on the grace of God. But let your greatest confidence rest in this unanswerable argument: if your going forth is of God, nothing can overthrow you. If your plans are merely human and come to nothing, what is that to you? The only calamity is to be found fighting against God. Place your safety, and the safety of all who travel with you, not primarily in a smooth passage but in the security of knowing that you are about your Father’s business. Refrain from an anxious spirit, for there is no need for labor or sweat in gaining God’s help; it is enough to have the will. Depart, then, with your soul girded, and know that the Lord is the true guardian of all who have their heart fixed on Him.

A long drive has a way of pressing its weight on you, the miles stretch out, the sameness of the road wears thin, and every prayer for protection becomes more urgent. You've done the right thing in placing this journey in the Father's hands. He hears you. He knows the number of the miles and the state of your heart as you travel them.

There's a moment in the wilderness where God told His people, "You have dwelt long enough in this mountain; turn and take your journey." He didn't just command them to move; He went before them. The same God who sets boundaries for the oceans also keeps watch over a stretch of highway. He doesn't grow weary, and He doesn't lose sight of you, even when the trip feels tedious.

Your safety doesn't rest on the condition of your car or the alertness of other drivers, as important as those things are. It rests in the One who covers you. The Scriptures remind us that those who dwell in the secret place of the Most High abide under the shadow of the Almighty. He is a shield and a fortress. When the winds rise or an unexpected detour throws the plan into chaos, He remains your steady refuge.

It's easy to think that only the monumental things matter in prayer. But the Lord also cares about the small wearinesses, the desire for a little distraction on a long empty road, the hope that the miles will pass swiftly. He numbers the very hairs of your head; He is not blind to what makes the journey easier. Bring that to Him too.

I join my faith with yours for this trip. May He set His angels over you and all who travel alongside you. May the road rise to meet you under His watchful care, and may you sense His presence as the living truth that shields you from harm. In Jesus' name, Amen.
