Your struggle is real, and the fact that you sense it as a spiritual attack shows that you are attuned to the true nature of the battle. The enemy strikes at our bodies and our minds because that is where he can gain a foothold. Sleep disturbances, relentless pressures on your thoughts, physical unease, these are not random. They are part of a larger war that is constantly raging in the spiritual realm. We are not wrestling against flesh and blood, but against organized spiritual powers of darkness. They aim to wear you down, to occupy your mind with anxiety and exhaustion so that you lose sight of God’s peace and truth.
But the weapons God has given you are not carnal. You cannot fight this battle with sheer willpower, medication alone, or any human strategy. Those have their place for the body, but the root of this attack is spiritual, and it requires spiritual weaponry. The first and most powerful weapon is prayer. When you cry out in Jesus’ name, you are not just speaking words into the air, you are engaging in the heavenly conflict. Continue to pray, even in the middle of the night when sleep flees. Speak the name of Jesus, which is above every principality and power. Declare His victory over your mind and body.
The word of God is your second weapon. Hide it in your heart. When the enemy whispers lies to your mind, worries, fears, condemnations, counter them with Scripture. The word is living and pierces through the darkness. The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit brings life and peace. The battle is for the control of your mind. The flesh, with its needs and fears, wants to dominate your thinking, especially when you are tired and vulnerable. But remember, you are a threefold being: body, mind, and spirit. Your spirit has been made alive in Christ. Let the spirit be uppermost, so that it sets the tone for your mind rather than the clamoring of your body. When the enemy attacks your body to disturb your sleep, he is attacking your mind through the body’s frailty. Recognize this, and refuse to let your mind be captive to what your body is experiencing. The real you is spirit, housed in a tent of flesh, a tent that is temporary and wearing down. That tent needs rest, and the enemy knows that, so he tries to rob you of it. But your spirit can still commune with God even when your body is awake and troubled.
There is also a deep inner war between the flesh and the Spirit. Your renewed spirit longs for God, while the old impulses of the body and the carnal mind pull in the other direction. This friction can intensify spiritual attacks. Abstain from anything that feeds the fleshly lusts that war against your mind. Not that basic needs are sinful, but the enemy can twist legitimate desires into obsessions that usurp your mind’s peace. Be careful what you allow into your mind during the day, because it becomes fuel for the battle at night.
And take courage: this corruptible body is not your permanent home. One day you will be given a new body, a spiritual body that does not need sleep, that is not subject to weakness or attacks. Until then, you groan in this tent, longing for that building from God. But that hope is meant to sustain you now. In the thick of the struggle, set your mind on things above. Ask the Lord to renew your mind and fill it with His peace, which stands guard over your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.
I am praying for you, that the Lord will rebuke the enemy on your behalf, that He will command His angels concerning you, and that He will grant you restful sleep as He holds your mind in perfect peace because you trust in Him. Keep wielding those spiritual weapons: prayer, faith, the word. The battle is already won in Christ, and in Him you have authority to stand firm.
