What you ask is good: for protection from the occult and magic, and for wisdom to know how to walk. But learn first that these very things you flee from are an abomination to the Lord. After He has sent His own Son, that any should still turn to amulets, divinations, incantations, and magic arts, these are crying sins, enough to provoke the anger of God. Flee such things with all your soul. Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. Let there be no superstitious observances in your house, no casting of nativities, no signs and lying wonders. For what fellowship has light with darkness? What concord has Christ with Belial? Renounce them wholly, and do not merely run from them while still clutching them in your heart.
The wisdom that delivers from these is not that of the world. The rulers of this age, with all their craft, are coming to nothing. Their wisdom is folly, but the foolishness of God is mightier than men. Christ was made unto us wisdom from God, and in Him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. He has revealed to us the mystery of His will, making us wise unto salvation. Therefore do not seek a sign, a vision, or a secret message through any forbidden means. The wisdom from above is pure, peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated. Ask of God, who gives to all liberally and upbraids not, and He will instruct you in the path you should take. He that is unlearned and ignorant, if he shows forth zeal and does all for the common good, may attain to heaven; how much more will the Lord guide the steps of one who fears Him!
As for intimidation, why do you fear them that can kill the body and after that have no more that they can do? Fear rather Him who has power to cast both soul and body into hell. If God is for you, who can prevail against you? The Lord walked upon the sea as upon a pavement, showing His absolute power over all creation. No charm, no curse, no evil word can move the soul that is founded upon the Rock. The grace of the Spirit shows forth His strength by whomever He will; people look at the outward man, but God sees the heart's steadfast trust. Let not fear make you seek protection in the shadow of Egypt, that is, in worldly devices or in the counsel of the ungodly. Your true protection is the Cross of Christ, which the world counts foolishness but is the power of God to those being saved.
How then should you proceed? First, cleanse your hands, you double-minded, and purify your hearts. Make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts. Walk as children of light, having no part in the occult, but rather exposing it. Let your conversation be in heaven, from where we look for the Saviour. If any of those old temptations return, resist the devil and he will flee from you. Do not parley with him by thinking, “I will just consult this one thing, or wear that for protection.” That is a show of wisdom in will-worship, but it has no value against the indulgence of the flesh. Instead, arm yourself with prayer and fasting, with the word of God, which is the sword of the Spirit. The Lord tells His secrets to them that fear Him; He will not leave you comfortless. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.
Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the children of disobedience. But you, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. I trust that He who has begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. May the Lord grant you a sound mind, a steadfast heart, and the wisdom that comes from above to guide your steps in every circumstance.
