🇺🇸 Protect Generals, Troops, "Save & Guide All in Authority,” 1Tim 2:1-2, Free Speech, Press, Peace & Gospel Proclamation Matt 28:19-20, 1Tim 2:3-4

You have set before me a long and fervent petition, full of the language of battle and the overthrow of enemies. I see your zeal for the protection of those in authority and for the free course of the gospel, and I do not dismiss it. Yet let us examine together what true warfare the Apostle sets before us, lest we turn the gospel of peace into a weapon of worldly conflict.

The feet of our soul are shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. This is no small matter. For the gospel is good news: the war with the devil is already won, and we who were once at enmity with God are now at peace with Him through Christ. When we pray for rulers and troops, we pray first that they may themselves be brought into this peace, that they may cease their rebellion against the Most High. The true conflict is not against flesh and blood, but against the spiritual forces of wickedness. And the preparation Paul speaks of is a most virtuous life. Are we then preparing a way for the gospel by the holiness of our conduct, or do we imagine that the angels need our prayers to strengthen them as though they were weak? The holy angels do the bidding of the Lord; it is our own hearts that need the encampment of His deliverance.

You ask that evil plans be intercepted and that confusion fall upon the enemies of our land. I do not forbid such prayer, but I remind you that God is not a God of war and fighting. Make war and fighting to cease, both that which is against Him and that which is against your neighbor. Be at peace with all men. The more a brother wars against you, by so much the greater your reward, as the Psalmist says, "With the haters of peace I was peaceful." Nothing so much delights God as to remember no evil.

I hear your longing for the gospel to be proclaimed freely, and this is good. But the gospel does not advance by the sword of Caesar or the safety of ships; it advanced when the apostles were beaten and imprisoned. Christ delivered us from this present evil world, not by granting us peace and safety as the world speaks of it, but by giving Himself for our sins. When men speak of peace and safety, sudden destruction often comes upon them, not because God delights in destruction, but because they are insensible, living in luxury while the judgment draws near. Let us not put our trust in the prosperity of our nation or the skill of our generals, for the end of all such things, if they are not laid at the foot of the cross, is death.

You are anxious about the spirits of darkness over unruly countries. Do not be dejected at the prosperity of the enemies of God. Their end is certain, and Christ will abolish all rule and authority that sets itself against Him. Our part is not to bind spirits with a word of command as though we were equal to the apostles, but to stand, to wrestle in prayer, and above all to examine our own souls. The one who insults and the one who practices self-control are far apart: the one is a tempestuous sea, the other a tranquil harbor. If you would see the gospel spread, become a harbor of peace. When we are quick to call down judgment, we reveal that our own remembrance of past sins still brings shame, and we forget that we were once slaves to sin. The grace that freed us from that shame is the same grace we extend to others.

So continue to pray for all in authority, for this is good and acceptable before God our Savior, who desires all to be saved. But let your prayers be filled with thanksgiving, not anxiety; with peace, not the clamor of earthly battle. Imitate the Son of God, who washed the feet of the one He knew would betray Him. Is our enemy worse than Judas? Then we have no cause to fear, for the victory is won. Let your life be the preparation of the gospel of peace, and trust that the Lord of hosts will guard His own.

Your prayer reaches toward something true: the church is charged to offer supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanks for all people, including every kind of ruler and commander. The reason is not first political ease. It is so that the gospel may go forward, that believers may live quiet and godly lives, and that people in high places may come to the knowledge of the truth. That means we pray for their safety and wisdom, but we pray even more for their salvation, because God desires all people to be saved through Jesus Christ.

Keep that gospel at the center. The good news is that God forgives sinners and counts them righteous through faith in Jesus Christ, not through their own worth or performance. If that gospel is lost, no amount of military strength or free speech will give us what we most need. So when you pray for generals and troops, pray also that they would hear and believe this good news. When you pray for judges and lawmakers, pray that they would govern in a way that leaves room for the open proclamation of Christ. But do not put your final hope in any human institution.

Your list of spiritual enemies is real. Scripture speaks of rulers, authorities, and spiritual forces of wickedness. But the answer is not to speak as though we command the angels or bind powers by a formula. We ask, and the living God acts. We intercede, and the risen Lord restrains. Even Jesus, at the start of his public ministry, went into the wilderness and faced the tempter, and the angels ministered to him. The defense of his people does not rest on our ability to manage the unseen realm. It rests on him.

So we can pray boldly for protection for those in danger, for confusion among violent plotters, for deliverance from evil, and for the restraint of the murderer and liar who opposes the gospel. We can ask the Lord to turn the schemes of bad actors to nothing. But we do this with thanksgiving, because the outcome belongs to the Father who hears prayer. We ask that the word of truth would run freely and be honored, even as it did when the apostle was in chains and his bonds served to advance the gospel rather than silence it.

That is how I would pray with you. Ask for wisdom and protection. Ask for open doors and honest government. Ask for the safety of those who serve. But let the deepest request be for the salvation of all in authority and for the fearless, faithful proclamation of Jesus Christ until he returns. Do not grow weary. Those who supply prayer behind the front lines are not less necessary than those who stand there. The work is one, and the reward is from the Lord alone. In Jesus' name.

We are deeply grateful that you entrusted us with the sacred privilege of standing in agreement with you in prayer for our leaders, troops, and nations. Your heart for wisdom, protection, and the proclamation of the Gospel has been lifted before the throne of grace, and we continue to intercede with fervent hope in the power of our Lord.

If God has moved in mighty ways since you posted—if He has shielded our generals, guided those in authority, preserved free speech, or opened doors for the Gospel—we would be overjoyed to hear your praise report. Let us rejoice together in His faithfulness and give Him all the glory.

If the answers you seek have not yet been seen, we invite you to post this request anew. We will not grow weary in lifting these burdens before the Father, for He hears the cries of His children. Let us persist in prayer, trusting that He is working even when we cannot see it, and that His purposes will prevail.

May the Lord surround our leaders, troops, and nations with His holy angels, confound the plans of the enemy, and grant peace where it is possible. May He restrain evil, deliver from temptation, and make a way for the light of Christ to shine in every dark place. We ask all these things in the mighty and matchless name of Jesus, our Savior and King. Amen.
