You pray for generals and troops, for free speech and peace, and you ask the angels to encamp around our land. These are good things to entreat, for the Apostle commands us to make supplications for all in authority. Yet consider the danger of such prayers when they flow from a heart that trusts in these outward securities more than in the grace of God. For how is it that you ask binding of spirits and confusion of enemies, and you do not first bind the spirit of covetousness in your own soul, which makes you worse than the wild beasts, chasing after superfluous things like a wolf while you wear the name of Christian? If the Gospel is to prevail, it has no need of our political freedoms or the swords of our armies. Look to the apostles: they were unlearned, in chains, persecuted, and yet they overcame their persecutors not by the power of the state but by the demonstration of the Spirit. The Gospel conquered the world when it was illegal, when the cross was made of none effect by human wisdom. Do you imagine that the truth of Christ stands in need of your senate’s protection?

You speak of free speech so the Gospel may be proclaimed openly. But the greatest speech is a life that speaks. Abel, though murdered, still speaks by his faith. The blood of the martyrs is a more eloquent proclamation than ten thousand tongues in a free press. And so often when we gain our peace and our legal protections, we grow fat and lazy, and the Gospel is adulterated. The Spirit does not enter into an unclean soul. Are your hands clean as you lift them for the president? You ask to be led not into temptation, yet you place your hope in a dignified life, in peaceful economics, in the restraining of unruly countries. The free man of this world can be Christ's bondservant, and the bondservant is the Lord's free man. But if you serve men for the sake of this dignity, you become a slave even if you call yourself free. Beware of false apostles who bear the form of an Apostle but not the power; Satan himself disguises himself as an angel of light. Even a minister of righteousness can be a deceitful worker, pulling up what has been planted. If your prayers for leaders become a cloak for love of this world, then you bear the form of godliness but deny the power.

The day of the Lord is incurable, full of anger and wrath. There will be no rescue then, no angel to deliver those who spoke much of binding spirits but did not mortify the flesh. The end of those things is death. So pray, yes, but let your prayer begin with your own soul. Weep for your sins and the sins of the nation, not with words only but with tears and a changed life. Then, whether we live under a tyrant or a mild ruler, we shall live peaceful and godly lives, because our peace is Christ, who has overcome the world.

Your prayer is soaked in the understanding that the fear of the Lord is the true beginning of wisdom. That kind of fear isn't a weak shrinking back; it is a profound hatred of evil. When you ask God to protect generals and troops, to guide those in authority, and to keep open doors for the gospel, you are reaching for the very wisdom that was crying out in the streets even before the world was framed. Wisdom is not merely a set of facts to memorize. It is the right use of knowledge, the skill of living in the light of who God is. And that wisdom declares plainly, “By me kings reign and princes decree justice.” If we want our leaders to govern well, we must pray they receive a wisdom that is not of this world.

The world offers a version of wisdom that is driven by envy, ambition, and self-preservation. It is earthly and sensual, and wherever it rules, confusion and every evil work follow. The cross stands in blunt opposition to that kind of wisdom, because God has made foolish the wisdom of this world. A message of salvation that depends on a crucified Savior will never impress the strategists who trust in chariots and horses. Yet it is the very power of God. So when you intercede for free speech, peace, and the spread of the gospel, you are not asking for a mere political advantage. You are asking that the divine foolishness that saves sinners would advance unhindered, and that no ruler would be so puffed up with pride as to oppose it. True wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord, and the fear of the Lord is to hate evil, to hate the pride, the arrogance, and the perverse speech that corrupt a nation from within.

Guard your own heart against the subtle pull to tolerate evil, even while you pray against it. The same chapter that personifies wisdom also warns against the man whose eye is fixed on evil and whose dainties are deceptive. Desire the true bread, which is to gain understanding and to love what God loves. As you ask for angelic protection and the binding of dark retaliation, remember that our struggle is not against flesh and blood. The weapons of that struggle are not forged by human wisdom. Our faith must not rest in the cleverness of men but in the demonstrated power of God. The angels who encamp around those who fear the Lord are not summoned by technique; they are dispatched according to His sovereign will, often in answer to the prayers of people who hate what He hates and treasure what He treasures.

Continue to pray with all confidence for the Commander in Chief, for the Joint Chiefs, for every corporal and sergeant, for pastors and lawmakers alike. The gospel you long to see proclaimed is the announcement of a free gift, not a reward for human effort. It is the wisdom that gives life to those who have it. So pray not only that our leaders would be shielded from harm, but that they would be turned away from the wisdom that comes to nothing and drawn toward the pure, peaceable, gentle wisdom from above. That wisdom is first of all pure; it will never strike a truce with evil. Ask boldly, knowing that such prayer pleases God, because He desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

We have been lifting your heartfelt request before the Lord, standing in agreement with you for the protection of our generals, troops, and all in authority. It has been our privilege to intercede for wisdom, guidance, and divine covering over our leaders—both spiritual and civic—as you so passionately prayed, aligning our petitions with Scripture and the will of God.

We continue to pray for free speech, a free press, and the unhindered proclamation of the Gospel, trusting that God’s purposes will prevail. We have asked the Lord to encamp His angels around those who fear Him, to deliver them from evil, and to restrain the plans of the enemy. We have wrestled in prayer against the forces of darkness, binding spirits of retaliation and confusion, and asking the Lord to grant peace where possible and open doors for the Gospel to advance.
