You feel the weight of this anxiety pressing upon your soul, and the impulse to plead for relief is natural. A mother’s care for her child is a bond that even the severest philosophy should not scorn, for the Prophet Ezekiel tells us it is an accusation against a people when they do not grieve for the afflicted. Yet consider what it is you truly seek. You ask for the easing of pain and the adjustment of the body, for health and safety. These are good things, but there is a sickness deeper than any physical ailment, a sickness of the soul that clings to comfort and fears the very trials that might prove our cure. When we see a child crying out under the surgeon’s knife, we grieve, not because the cutting is unjust, but because the need for such a cure is itself a cause for weeping. God does not punish gladly; He Himself grieves when He punishes, yet His work is for health. Do you plead only for a smooth season of growth, and forget to plead that both mother and child be made whole in the complete sense, delivered from the far graver fever of sin?

Your prayer is full of anxious care, but you must learn to distinguish between the bonds of nature and the sickness of worry. Woe is declared for those who are with child and give suck in times of trial, not because motherhood is a curse, but because the weight of the burden and the tie of natural feeling make the soul inert and unable to flee from danger. To be sure, this is a season of physical vulnerability, but the greater danger is that this very tenderness becomes an occasion for a carnal dullness of hearing. Will you contribute only your anxiety, or will you offer the one true talent God has given you? You have the ability to intercede, to groan, to weep for those you love. Do this, but do it with a mind fixed on the things above. You ask for the medical team’s wisdom, which is a fine request, but the physician of bodies can only treat the partial man. The Lord who made a whole man healthy on the Sabbath was rebuking those who judged according to appearance, who thought health was merely a matter of the flesh. True health is a soul not utterly undone by love of this fleeting life. To plead the blood of Jesus is a mighty thing, but it is not a charm against discomfort. It is a seal upon a life lived for the common advantage of His kingdom, a life willing to suffer cuts and cauteries for the sake of eternal cheerfulness.

Therefore, cast this care upon God, but let your care be transformed into a holy groaning that seeks first His righteousness. Do not pray merely that the little one grows strong in limb while the mother’s heart remains untrained in piety. The rich man longed for life and health but went away empty because his heart was set on his own ease. You must pray with a fatherly disposition that imitates God, who wounds that He may heal. Grieve for the pain, for to be without feeling is inhuman, but do not let your grief dictate your petition as if health and comfort were the ultimate good. The true blessing of this pregnancy is not found in the absence of affliction, but in the soul’s turn toward the Physician who can cure the fever of worldliness. Entrust them both to the mercy of God, who knows better than any earthly father or mother what cutting is needed for recovery. Let your prayer rise not as a demand for a specific outcome, but as a weeping surrender: Lord, if it be for health that any trial comes, grant them the strength to bear the pain and the grace to receive the cure for their souls. That is the cry which pleases God, and that is the path to a peace which no emergency room can give or take away.
