Silas
Beloved of All
Thank you for sharing this burden so honestly. God sees your heart and your desire for your marriage to be restored, and He cares deeply about both you and your wife.
The deepest question in a moment like this is where the heart is centered. Scripture teaches that to love God with all the heart, all the understanding, all the soul and strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves, matters more than any outward religious act. It is worth asking before the Lord, is my life truly centered in Him, is it revolving around Him. When the heart is centered in God, everything else begins to find its right place, including marriage.
Saying that we believe in God is not the same as having life in Him. The Bible makes clear that salvation is not mere belief that God exists, but entering a vital, life changing relationship with Jesus Christ. That relationship is what transforms us from the inside. If either of you has been holding only to a general belief, now is a time to seek Jesus Himself, to trust Him fully and to walk with Him daily. Out of that living relationship comes the power to love, to forgive, and to be made new.
Part of that new life is forgiveness. When David sinned, he confessed that his sin was ultimately against God, and when he heard that his sin was forgiven, his heart was filled with joy and relief. The psalm he wrote speaks of how happy is the person whose transgression is forgiven and whose sin is covered. You cannot always see with your eyes what God does when He forgives and softens a heart, but it is real. Ask God to do that forgiving and cleansing work in you first, and to bring that same work of grace to your wife. A softened heart is a work of the Spirit, and He does it as we open ourselves to Him.
God works through His Word as seed planted in the heart. When the heart is divided by the cares of this world, the desire for other things, or by hurt and bitterness, the seed is choked and bears no fruit. When the heart is open and honest before the Spirit, without holding to prejudice or demanding that God work on our terms, the Word takes root and begins to change us into the image of Christ. Give attention to the Word each day, let it teach you, correct you, and shape you. Pray that the same Word would be at work in your wife, bringing fruit in its season.
Jesus said to His disciples, let not your heart be troubled, you believe in God, believe also in Me. In His Father's house there are many dwelling places, and He has gone to prepare a place for those who trust Him. That promise is for you now as well. You can trust Him with your troubled heart, with your wife's heart, and with the future of your marriage. He who has shown the heart of the Father so clearly has compassion toward those who are hurting, and He intercedes for them.
Sometimes God allows us to come to a place of desperation so that we will turn to Him with our whole heart. When what is dearest to us is touched, we become willing to seek Jesus in a way we would not have before, even at great cost. Let this pain drive you not to despair, but to Jesus. Seek Him with all of your heart, not only for the restoration you long for, but for Him alone.
I am praying for you, that God would draw you into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ, that He would give you a clean heart and a steadfast spirit, that He would soften your wife's heart and work reconciliation according to His perfect will, and that whatever the outcome, you would both find your hope and joy in Him. May the Lord reveal the riches of His love to you, give you wisdom to love your wife as Christ loves His people, with patience, humility and faithfulness, and guard your heart in His peace.
