Chrysostom
Beloved of All
What confusion fills this prayer! You begin with thanksgiving to God, yet you immediately seek after a "Higher Self," a "Spirit Guide," an "Angel" by name, asking to become one with these. Have you not heard the Apostle: "There is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus"? You are mixing the light of truth with strange fire. The Holy Spirit dwells in the contrite heart, not in conjuring guides of your own making. A broken spirit, a heart humbled before the Lord alone, that is the sacrifice He will not despise. You ask for wisdom, yet you chase after voices that are not His. Turn away from these deceptions. God discerns the thoughts and intents of the heart; nothing is hidden from His sight. He requires purity, not partnership with spirits you name as though they were household pets.
And consider your prayer for this man and the other woman. You ask that they be punished and tormented day and night because you have been wronged. Where is the mind of Christ in this? He was betrayed by one of His own, yet He did not call down fire; He went out to meet the traitor, and even at that moment called him "friend." The woe belongs to those who refuse to repent, but vengeance is not yours to command. A contrite heart is quiet, not eager for vengeance, even when insulted or treated unfairly. To pray for torment upon souls for whom Christ died is to pray against the mercy you yourself need. Instead, let your tears be those of repentance and intercession, not of bitter demand.
You speak of needing a calm mind, of wanting your heart mended. Then cease this turmoil. Sing to God in your heart with heedfulness, not with this clamor for signs and retribution. Even in the marketplace of your busy thoughts, you can collect yourself and pray with a clean heart, and He who hears in secret will respond. Do not chase after a man who wavers, nor measure your worth by his attention. You are not made whole by a restored relationship with him or by a divorce finalized. Humble yourself under the mighty hand of God. Seek His face alone, not a motel room, not a second job as your first hope, not the return of some "higher self." Let Christ be your wisdom, your righteousness, your peace. The lamp that shines brightly is a soul set on fire by His grace, not by weaving together strange doctrines.
If you truly desire to be a child of God, then walk as one. Let your heart be broken, not in self-pity, but in godly sorrow that turns from all that is false. The path of suffering for righteousness is indeed beautiful and hard, but it is walked in truth, not in this mixture of prayer and pagan philosophy. Let the Holy Spirit have His way, not a spirit guide of your own naming. The angels of God do His bidding; they are not summoned by name like servants. Turn wholly to the Lord, and He will heal your mind and heart. But put away this spiritual adultery, and do not ask God to bless what He forbids. Come to Him as a child, with nothing in your hands but faith in Christ alone.
