Memory-The Handmaid of Hope
The Man of Sorrows
A Sermon for the Most Miserable of Men
We hear the heaviness in your heart and we have lifted you up together before the throne of grace. The grief you carry since your loved one passed away, the constant strife and noise around you, the sadness and stress that leaves you close to tears, all of this is known to our Father who sees you and loves you deeply.

The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit Psalm 34:18. He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds Psalm 147:3. We want you to know that your sorrow is not unseen and your quiet and gentle spirit is precious to God. It is not a failure to feel sad and depressed after loss and in the midst of ongoing conflict, but God does not want you to remain without comfort and hope. He invites you to bring every burden to Him.

We pray for the peace you are longing for, not just the absence of fighting and problems, but the true peace that only Jesus can give. Jesus said Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you, not as the world gives, give I to you. Don not let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful John 14:27. And we are reminded In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7. This peace does not depend on quiet circumstances, but on trusting that He is with you in the storm. You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you Isaiah 26:3.

We also join you in praying for safety in a world that feels so unsafe. It grieves us as well when we see violence and lives taken, and you are right that guns and violence do not solve the problems of the human heart, for the heart is where sin and anger begin. Yet we know God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble Psalm 46:1. He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty Psalm 91:1. We trust Him to be your protector and to keep you from harm, and we pray for His mercy and restraint upon this world that so desperately needs Him.

We pray together now for you.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus, and we thank You that we can come boldly through Him. We lift up this dear one to You who is weary, sad and close to tears. Lord, You see the loneliness and grief that has lingered for years, You see every argument and every hurtful word spoken against this gentle and quiet heart, You see the stress and depression that feels never ending. We ask You to draw near and comfort as only You can. Pour out Your peace that surpasses all understanding and guard this heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Teach us to cast all our worries on You, because You care for us 1 Peter 5:7. Bring healing to the brokenness, bring rest to the weary, for Jesus said Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest Matthew 11:28. Give true joy again, not a fleeting happiness based on circumstances, but joy rooted in Your unfailing love. Keep this dear one safe from harm, keep their mind and body safe, and keep all people under Your merciful hand. Let Your presence be a shelter day and night, and let Your will be done in this life. We ask that You surround them with godly community, with people who will speak kindly, listen, and point them to You, and if the heaviness remains, give courage to seek help from a pastor or trusted Christian counselor. We pray all of this in the precious and only name by which we are saved, Jesus Christ, Amen.

We encourage you to keep seeking Him daily in prayer and in His Word, even with simple honest prayers like the one you have prayed. He hears you when you call on Jesus name, for there is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. Stay close to Him, and let Him be your peace and your safety each day. We are continuing to pray that you will feel His nearness, that the turmoil around you will be quieted, and that He will restore to you the joy of His salvation Psalm 51:12.

We appreciate you sharing so honestly with us. Losing someone you love leaves a mark that does not lift on a set timeline, and it makes sense that joy has felt distant since then. To carry that grief while also facing frequent yelling and conflict around you would wear anyone down, especially when you describe yourself as quiet, kind, and not looking for trouble.

It is understandable you would feel sad and stressed and close to tears, and that the violence you see in the world would weigh on you too. Wanting peace and safety for yourself and for others is a good and caring desire, and we hear how much you want to feel like yourself again.

We are praying for you and holding your concerns before the Lord with you. When sadness and stress stay heavy for a long while, it can help to not carry it alone. If you have a trusted pastor, counselor, or a safe person in your life, consider letting them know how you have been feeling and talking with them regularly. Since you mentioned feeling depressed and close to crying often, we also encourage you to reach out to a counselor or your doctor for support, alongside prayer.

Father, we lift our friend to You. You see the grief that still hurts years later, the daily tension and harsh words, and the deep wish for peace and safety. Please bring comfort, steady rest, and wise, caring people around them. Guard them and those they love, and lead them step by step toward Your peace. In Jesus name, Amen.

Your sorrowful prayer has been heard and it is carried with tenderness to the throne of grace. The grief that has lingered since your loved one passed away, the daily strife of voices raised in anger, the heaviness and depression that brings you close to tears, and the fear you feel when you see violence in this world, all these are known to the Lord who is called the God of peace.

There is a word of promise given for such a time as this, You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. This is not a peace that comes from quiet circumstances or from the absence of trouble. The world is indeed not a safe place, for it lies in sin, and there can be no true peace where rebellion against God remains. Many cry peace, peace where there is no peace, and many seek a mere lull of anxiety or a stagnation of thought, but that will not hold in the day of trial.

True peace is peace with God, and it comes only one way. It is peace through the blood of Jesus Christ, who is Himself our peace. Peace with God is the treaty made at the cross, and peace in the conscience is the publication of it. The Father is the God of peace, the Son has bought peace with His blood, and the Holy Spirit works that peace in the soul. Do not seek after peace first. Seek after Christ first, and peace will come next. He has left this legacy to His own, Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you.

When the mind is stayed upon Him, He keeps the heart in perfect peace even with sorrows surging round, even with loved ones far away or taken from us, for in Jesus keeping we are safe, and they are safe who are in Him. He has vanquished death and all its powers, so that even when death shadows us and ours we may still know that whisper of peace within through His blood. And earths struggles shall soon cease, for Jesus calls His people to Heavens perfect peace.

I pray for you now that you may know this filling and well founded peace which is peace in believing.

O Lord God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus through the blood of the everlasting covenant, look upon this weary and sorrowful soul. Thou knowest the grief that has not lifted, the stress and sadness, the strife that surrounds, and the fear of harm in a violent world. Forgive sin and grant reconciliation through Jesus Christ alone, for there is no other name whereby we may be saved and no other foundation for peace. Speak peace through the blood of atonement to this troubled conscience, and keep the mind stayed upon Thee. Grant comfort in mourning, quietness to anxious thoughts, and strength to bear sorrow with Christ. Keep this one and keep many in this dark world from violence and harm so far as it pleases Thy wisdom, and above all keep them in Thy hand unto eternal life. Let Thy peace, which passes all understanding, guard heart and mind through Christ Jesus. In His name we ask it, Amen.
