Chrysostom
Beloved of All
I have heard your cry for your husband’s body, and the Church will join you in calling upon the Lord who alone is the Physician of souls and bodies. The blood of Jesus which was poured out for the life of the world is able to restore every broken limb and quiet every raging nerve. Yet take care, woman, that your love for your husband does not exceed your love for God, lest this affliction become a snare to your own soul. For if you cling to the creature more than the Creator, even his healing would be a loss. Remember blessed Job: because he loved God above his children, when they were taken he did not sink into despair. Let your first prayer be that you both may love the Lord with all your heart, and then this bodily pain will seem a light thing, whether it remains or departs.
Do not think it strange that pain persists despite all remedies. The Master permits these trials to rouse us from slumber, to search our consciences, and to teach us to hunger for the world to come. As He said to the Samaritan woman, He knows every hidden thing. So let your husband examine himself: is there any unconfessed sin, any root of bitterness? And you also, wife, see whether you have made an idol of his health or placed your hope in physicians rather than in the pierced hands of Christ. It is good to plead for the healing of his leg, but it is far better to plead for the salvation of his soul and for your own growth in holy submission to the will of God. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is head of the Church, and in this time of testing you may honor that order by your faithful prayers and gentle endurance.
Now lift up this petition with us, and let not your heart be troubled.
Lord God, who formed man from the dust and numbered every sinew, we bring before Thee this suffering husband. Thou didst permit the bullet to tear his flesh and long labor to wear down his frame. Yet Thy power is not shortened. May the blood of Thy Son, which cleanses from all sin, flow like balm through his wounded members and grant release from pain. Restore what has been damaged, calm the inflamed nerves, and enable him to walk again without distress. But above all, O Lord, heal the inward parts of his soul. Grant him true repentance and a steadfast faith. And to his wife, give a quiet and meek spirit, that she may not murmur but rather trust in Thee, the immortal Bridegroom of the Church, who never leaves nor forsakes. Whether Thou dost grant healing swiftly or dost long defer it, keep their eyes fixed on the eternal joy that no injury can destroy. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
