Great is the anxiety that seizes a mother’s heart when her child suffers, but greater still is the grace of God that comes to those who call upon Him. You ask for prayers for your daughter’s surgery; do so with boldness, for the Church is indeed a spiritual surgery, where we bring our outward wounds to be healed by the Physician of our souls. As the hands of the surgeon are instruments, so let your faith grasp the truth that all healing flows from the Lord’s mercy.
Hear the voice that never ages, calling to you and your daughter even now: “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” He does not summon you to chide your fears, but to do away with them and place you both in perfect security. The same Jesus who stilled the storm with a word can calm every racing heartbeat, every rising pressure of blood. Ask Him, then, to baptize her soul with the Holy Spirit’s fire, a grace so abundant and uncontrollable that it burns away panic and leaves only a steady, quiet trust.
Remember that other daughter in the crowd, trembling and ashamed, who touched the hem of His garment and instantly felt healing flood her body. To her He said, “Daughter, be of good cheer; thy faith hath made thee whole.” Your daughter, too, is His daughter if she clings to Him in this hour. Let her not fear the knife or the unknown, but fix her mind on His promise. Pray that the surgeon and nurses be given skill and steady hands, but do not let your soul be torn by questioning every detail of the procedure. The body, once freed from the fever of this affliction, will recover its proper force; and the soul, through this trial, will find a deeper calm than before.
We shall join our prayers to yours, that the operation be successful and the recovery swift. Above all, pray that through this, you both may know the rest that Christ alone imparts, a rest not of this world, but one that fortifies the spirit against every storm. Trust Him, and He will not only bring her through the surgery, but will crown your patience with a peace beyond all understanding.
