Prayer to overcome repeated sin

Please pray for me to breakfree from this repeated cycle of this particular sin which I keep falling back into almost every single day. I'm unable to stop myself from not doing it. Because of this I'm unable to read the Bible, or pray, I feel unworthy, I'm scared of my eternal life, and also the wellbeing of this earthly life. Please pray for me to become Godly, live a holy life, like what God likes, and dislike what He dislikes. Also pray for me to land a decent job that God has planned for me. It feels like every doors are closed where ever I look, I'm in a really bad situation financially as well. Thank you for your prayers in advance.

We hear the burden in your heart and we stand with you in this struggle, bringing your request before the throne of grace together in Jesus' name. We understand the exhaustion and shame that comes from falling into the same sin almost every day, and the feeling of being trapped and unable to stop in your own strength. We also hear your fear about your eternal life and your earthly wellbeing, and your deep desire to become godly, to live a holy life, to love what God loves and hate what He hates, and to see Him open the door to the work He has planned for you.

We want to gently but firmly rebuke the lie that keeps you from the Bible and from prayer. The enemy wants you to believe that because you have sinned you are unworthy to come to God, so you stay away and the sin grows stronger. That is not the truth of Scripture. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit Romans 8:1. We are told to draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need Hebrews 4:16. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9. Do not let shame keep you from confession and from the Word. It is the Word and prayer that cleanses and strengthens us, and turning away from them only leaves us weaker for the next temptation.

We also must lovingly rebuke the sin itself, whatever this particular repeated sin may be. God calls us not to make peace with sin but to turn from it completely. We must not continue in sin that grace may abound, for how shall we who died to sin live any longer in it Romans 6:1-2. Sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law, but under grace Romans 6:14. God has made a way of escape for every temptation, for no temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it 1 Corinthians 10:13. We are called to walk by the Spirit, and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh Galatians 5:16 and to resist the devil, and he will flee from you James 4:7. If this repeated cycle involves sexual immorality, impurity, pornography, or any form of fornication or adultery which is sex outside of marriage between a man and a woman, we must be clear that God calls us to flee sexual immorality and to keep our bodies holy, for our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. Whatever the sin is, we cannot overcome it by willpower alone. We overcome by repentance, by renewing our minds through the Word Romans 12:2, by removing triggers and making no provision for the flesh, by bringing it into the light with a trusted mature Christian believer for accountability, and by daily depending on the Holy Spirit and not on ourselves.

We notice your prayer mentions God but does not mention Jesus Christ, and we must speak to this because it is central to everything you are asking. It is only by the name of Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only through Him that we have forgiveness and eternal life. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If you have not yet fully surrendered your life to Jesus, we urge you to believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord Romans 10:9, turning from sin and trusting Him alone to save you and to give you power to live a holy life. It is His blood that makes you worthy, not your own perfection.

We also lift up your financial need and the closed doors for work. We know how heavy it feels when every door seems shut and the pressure mounts. Our Father knows your needs. We are reminded to seek first God's Kingdom, and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well Matthew 6:33 and that our God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:19. He has plans for you, for we know the thoughts that God thinks toward us, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give us hope and a future Jeremiah 29:11. We pray that even in this waiting He will provide, sustain you, and guide you to the decent work He has prepared for you.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son. We lift up this dear one who is weary from this daily battle with sin and we ask for Your mercy and Your delivering power. Forgive us where we have sinned and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us Psalm 51:10. Break this cycle and stronghold by the power of the cross. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit so that we may walk by the Spirit and have strength to say no to the flesh, to flee temptation, and to resist the devil. Help us to love what You love and hate what You hate, and to hunger for Your Word and for prayer again. Take away the spirit of fear and shame, for God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control 2 Timothy 1:7, and give us assurance of eternal life through faith in Jesus. We also ask You to open the right door for work, to provide financially, and to show Your faithful provision and leading in this earthly life. Teach us to trust You day by day and to live holy as You are holy. We ask all of this in the mighty and only saving name of Jesus Christ, amen.

We hear how heavy and exhausting this daily cycle has been, and how deeply you want to live in a way that pleases God. Thank you for being honest about feeling stuck, unworthy to pray or open your Bible, and afraid both about eternity and about daily life. Carrying that alone for a long time can make shame feel louder than hope.

We have found it helps to think of growth less as trying harder in a single moment and more as training over time, like preparing for a long race. Small, steady practices done regularly tend to shape us more than big resolutions that collapse under pressure. Wanting holiness while still feeling pulled toward old habits is a common tension for believers, and that struggle itself does not mean you are beyond His grace or that you have to earn your way back before you can come to Him.

A gentle next step could be choosing one small, doable rhythm instead of trying to fix everything at once. It might be a brief, honest prayer at the same time each day, even when you feel unworthy, or reading a few verses and sharing honestly with one trusted pastor or mature friend who can check in weekly. Staying connected to one person who knows your struggle keeps shame from growing in isolation. For the job search, that same person may also be able to pray with you about practical next steps and help you focus on one application or contact at a time.

Father, we bring our brother before You. You see his desire to love what You love and turn from what You dislike. Draw him close even when he feels unworthy, give him strength to step away from what entangles him, restore his freedom to pray and hear from You, and guide him toward the work You have for him while providing for his daily needs. Lead him step by step into a holy and hopeful walk with You. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your honest and humble confession has been heard with deep sympathy and with thankfulness to God, for the very sorrow you feel over sin is itself a token that the Spirit of God is at work within you.

You must know that indwelling sin remains even in the best of men. When you would serve your God the best, sin still dwells in you and works most furiously. The truly loving child of God, though he knows sin is there, hates that sin. It is a pain and misery to him, and he never makes the corruption of his heart an excuse for the corruption of his life. Do not take your struggle as a cloak for continuance in sin, but neither take it as proof that you are cast away. To say with Job, Behold I am vile, is the language of the saints, not of the reprobate.

You write that you feel unworthy to read the Bible or to pray, and that you are scared concerning your eternal life. Hear this, that shame may become your pathway to salvation. There is not one who is ashamed of himself because of his past sin but he is the very man Christ came to save, for the Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. He bore your shame in His own body on the cross. Your sin was laid upon Him, and He was punished for it, and therefore your sin may be honestly put away without any violation of justice, for Christ has made a full atonement. Grace does much more abound over abounding sin. As the arch of heaven far exceeds the globe of the earth, so does divine grace exceed your sin. Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.

At the same time that the guilt of sin is taken away, the Spirit of God works to take away the guile. When guilt is forgiven, guile is forsaken. Pray therefore not only for pardon, but that the Lord would cut from your heart the very love of sin, even though the painful knife must follow every root of the evil, for God desires truth in the inward parts. The only life in which a man can enjoy the blessedness of pardoned sin is a downright straightforward life, like clear glass, confessing sin without reserve and walking before God without guile.

Do not on account of unworthiness suspend confession or relax supplication. If we were not evermore sinning, if unholiness did not stain even our holy things, perhaps we might suspend prayer awhile, but as it is, all our times, whether of pleasure or of despondency, should ring us to our knees. Where there is genuine religion within, it will be more or less habitual to the soul to pray. Come as you are, unworthy as you feel, and plead the merit of Jesus blood alone, for salvation is through Jesus Christ alone and by no other name. Let holy fear be upon you, not to drive you from God, but to drive you to Him, for he who fears the Lord will also trust Him and will say, I cannot make compromise with any sin.

You desire to become godly, to live a holy life, to love what God loves and to dislike what He dislikes. This is the right prayer, and the master motive for it must be gratitude to Him who has saved you with a great salvation. We are not saved in sin, but from sin. If we say we continue in sin that grace may abound, our condemnation would be just. By the power of His Spirit, what manner of people ought we to be in all holy conversation. One holy action is a better argument than a thousand eloquent discourses.

Concerning your earthly need and the closed doors in your search for work, the Lord knows your financial distress. There is a river, the streams of which shall make glad the city of God. God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved, God shall help her and that right early. He who foresees the full stress of the calamity is able to make a way where you see none. Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and trust Him to provide what is needful in His own time and way.

We now pray for you. O Lord, look upon this weary and burdened soul who is held in a repeated cycle of sin and feels unable to break free. Grant a full sense of pardon through the precious blood of Jesus, and with pardon grant a change of nature. By Thy Holy Spirit remove both guilt and guile, and plant truth in the inward parts. Teach this soul to hate sin and to love holiness, to delight in Thy word and to be constant in prayer even in seasons of shame and fear. Give assurance of eternal salvation, not by works but by Christ the author of eternal salvation, and let that assurance bear fruit in a life of gratitude and obedience. And Father, in Thy mercy, open the door that Thou hast appointed for honest labour, provide for every temporal need, and let this tried one prove Thy faithfulness, that he may rejoice in the Lord and joy in the God of his salvation. Your honest confession has been heard and we are praying for you with care and hope. The struggle you describe, falling again and again into the same sin and then feeling too unworthy to open the Bible or to pray, is one many believers know, and your desire to be made godly, to love what God loves and to turn from what He dislikes, is itself a good sign of God working in you.

Do not let shame keep you from the very means God has given for your healing. It is true that a virtuous life is required and that we are to draw near with hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, but we do not first make ourselves worthy and then come to Christ. He is the Lamb who bears the sin of the world, and it is His grace that cleanses the conscience and washes the soul. When you feel unworthy, that is the moment to come to Him in prayer and in the hearing of His word, not to turn away.

Scripture speaks of two kinds of sorrow. The sorrow of the world works death, leaving fear and despair, but godly sorrow works repentance unto salvation. Your fear for your eternal life and your grief over sin can become godly sorrow if it leads you to turn again to Christ in faith, confessing sin honestly and trusting His mercy, rather than staying in condemnation.

Deliverance from a repeated sin is not by one act alone. It requires careful hearing of the word and continual recollection of it, fortitude, watchfulness, and contempt for the things that feed the sin. The grace of God through the Spirit is what frees us from the law of sin and death, and that grace both crowns us at the start and helps us in the struggle. The Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one, yet we are not to be idle and expect prayer alone to do all. We must cooperate with His help.

So we encourage you to block the approach of the enemy by not leaving yourself in leisure and idleness where temptation grows strong. Fill your time with profitable employments, give yourself wholly to the hearing of Scripture even in small portions each day, to prayer even with few words, to sober watchfulness, and to fellowship where you can be honest and receive help. When you fall, do not hide, but confess quickly, receive forgiveness, and rise again to walk in the new and living way Christ has opened.

We are praying for you in this way, that God would grant you true repentance and strength to break this cycle, that He would renew your conscience and give you a love for holiness, that He would restore your confidence to read His word and to pray daily, and that He would guard you and make you firm in Christ. We are also praying for your earthly needs, that in His wisdom He would open the right door for decent work and provide for you financially where now every door seems closed. He knows your needs and He is able to provide as you seek first His kingdom.

Keep drawing near, keep fighting with His help, and trust that He who promised to save will not deceive those who turn to Him with a willing heart.
