Prayer to become a chaplain

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I would like to actually work as chaplain and am praying God opens up the opportunity to study in this area, and the window of opportunity to work as a chaplain too. Thanks for praying.

We are encouraged by your desire to serve the Lord as a chaplain and we join you in praying that God will open the right doors for study and for service in His perfect timing. This is a noble desire to shepherd and care for souls, to bring the comfort of Christ to those who are hurting, lonely, or in crisis.

We are reminded that God equips those He calls. As it is written, If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. James 1:5. And also, Be diligent to present yourself approved by God, a workman who doesn’t need to be ashamed, properly handling the Word of Truth. 2 Timothy 2:15. A chaplain is called to serve not for personal gain but willingly as God would have you, not for dishonest gain but eagerly, nor as lording it over those entrusted to you, but making yourselves examples to the flock. 1 Peter 5:2-3. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. Colossians 3:23. We pray that as you seek training, the Lord will grant you wisdom, discipline, and a deep grounding in Scripture so that you may rightly minister to others.

We noticed your request mentions God but does not mention Jesus Christ, and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. If we have not yet put our trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, believing that He died for our sins and rose again, we encourage you to call upon His name today, for if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9. It is in His name that we pray and are heard.

So together we pray for you. Father in heaven, in the name of Jesus Christ we lift up this desire to become a chaplain before Your throne of grace. We ask that You make clear Your will and open the window of opportunity for study and for work as a chaplain if this is Your calling. Where You open a door, give favor, provision, and peace, and where You close a door, give wisdom to wait. We ask that You prepare the heart for ministry, granting humility, compassion, sound doctrine, and endurance. Equip this one through study and through the local church, surround them with godly counsel and mentors, and let their life be a testimony of Your grace. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them. Ephesians 2:10. Direct the steps and establish this path for Your glory. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

We encourage you to continue to seek the Lord diligently in prayer and in the Word, to remain planted and accountable in a Bible believing local church where your calling can be affirmed and tested, and to pursue training that is biblically faithful and that will equip you to handle Scripture accurately and to counsel with truth and grace. Trust the Lord’s timing, for He sees the doors no one else can open. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. Revelation 3:8. As you wait, continue to serve faithfully where you are now, for God often prepares us for greater service through present faithfulness.

We love hearing your heart to serve as a chaplain. Wanting both the training and the open door to do the work shows a thoughtful sense of calling, and we are glad to pray with you for wisdom in each step.

Chaplaincy is beautiful work that blends a love for people with steady preparation. Those who do it well often point to the value of not walking alone but learning under trusted pastors and experienced chaplains, getting solid formation before stepping into hospitals, military or other settings. It can help to treat this season as a time of listening and exploring as much as pursuing.

One next step that often clarifies things is to have a couple of conversations close to home. You might ask your pastor if he knows chaplains you could shadow or interview, and ask what study paths they recommend in your area, whether a certificate, seminary course or clinical pastoral education. Learning what is required locally for the kind of chaplaincy you hope to do can make the path to study and work much clearer, and your church can help discern timing and fit.

Father, we bring our brother before You in Jesus name. You see his desire to care for others in vulnerable moments. Give him clear guidance for where to study, provision for the cost and time, and favor for the right doors to open in Your timing. Shape his character and skills for this work and lead him to wise mentors. Amen.

Your desire to serve the Lord in the work of a chaplain is a good and weighty desire, and we have joined with you in prayer that He who calls His sheep by name would make His will plain to you.

We are reminded that every true service for Christ must begin with His effectual calling. As Zaccheus was called down from the tree and as Abram was called to leave his country and go whither God would lead him, so the call to ministry must spring from the divine purpose and be worked by divine energy. It is not enough to be called of man, it must be a call from heaven and a call to heaven. The Scripture says, Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, and again we are called partakers of the heavenly calling. Try your desire by this test. Is it a holy calling that sets your heart upon holiness, a high calling that lifts your affections to heavenly things and to the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus, and a heavenly calling that you can trace to the hand and voice of God Himself. If it be so, then press toward the mark, for He who calls will also equip and keep you till you come to the land whither He sends you.

You ask especially for an open door, both to study and to labour. Our Lord says, I am the door, and He is an open door set before His people. Doors meet us everywhere, and Christ meets us at every door when we seek Him in faith. Your extremity is often God's opportunity. When you have come to the end of your own strength and see no way forward, you have reached the beginning of His working. There is also a fountain open for sin and for uncleanness, and that same fountain is open for the child of God to wash and be revived for service. Come to it daily, that you may be cleansed and made fit for the work, for pastors and teachers and all who would minister to souls must live near that open fountain.

We have prayed, and will continue to pray, that the Lord would in His perfect time open the window for sound training that will ground you in the open Word of God, which is our best evidence and our sufficient rule, and that He would then open a door of usefulness where you may go in and out and find pasture among those who need comfort, counsel and the gospel of rest. May He who still cries, Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, make you an instrument to bring that invitation to the weary and the heavy laden in hospitals, barracks, prisons or wherever He shall place you.

We ask the Lord to grant you wisdom to know His leading, provision for what you need to study, favour with those who oversee such preparation, and above all a deepening walk with Christ Himself, that hearing His voice you may follow Him and lead others to Him.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Your desire to serve as a chaplain is a good and worthy aspiration, and we are grateful you have shared this request so we can pray with you.

We hear in your words a sincere calling to minister to others in times of need, and we pray that the Lord who calls His servants will open the doors before you for both study and service. As it is written, we are to walk worthily of the calling with which we were called, and to fulfill every desire for goodness and every work of faith with power. May God make you worthy of this calling and grant you perseverance as you seek to prepare.

We are reminded of Paul and Silas who at midnight prayed and sang praises to God while in prison, and the prisoners heard them. Even when scourged and bound in the inner prison, they kept vigil and did not give way to sleep or despair, and through their faithfulness the keeper of the prison and his whole household came to believe. A chaplain often stands in such places of darkness, pain, and confinement, bringing prayer, mercy, and the word of the Lord to those who are listening. Like those apostles, your work would be a ministry of mercy, which opens the gates of heaven and makes men like God, for it is written we shall be merciful as our Heavenly Father is merciful.

We also remember that God does not call many who are wise or mighty according to the flesh, but He chooses willing and humble hearts to make known His wisdom. If He has placed this burden on your heart, He is able to equip you for it.

So we pray now for you. Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, through whom alone is salvation, we bring this servant before You. Grant wisdom and provision for study, open the window of opportunity for training, and in Your perfect time open the door to work as a chaplain where You will be most glorified. Give strength to endure, a heart full of compassion, and a voice that speaks Your truth with grace. Lead this dear one to the very vestibule of that opportunity, and when the time is right, open the doors that no man can shut. May all that is done be for Your glory and for the good of those who will hear. Amen.
