Prayer to be a great cook

Heavenly Father, give me grace today to become a great cook. Teach me patience, creativity, cleanliness, wisdom, and excellence. Help me prepare nutritious, delicious meals for my family, patients, and families I serve. Guide my hands as I learn, practice, improve, and serve with love. May every meal bring nourishment and joy. “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” — 1 Corinthians 10:31 Amen.

We join with you in this desire to become a great cook for the glory of God and for the good of those you serve, and we are encouraged by your heart to prepare nutritious and delicious meals with love, patience, creativity, cleanliness, wisdom and excellence. This is a beautiful calling, for whether we eat or drink or whatever we do, we are to do all to the glory of God as 1 Corinthians 10:31 reminds us, Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. And Colossians 3:23 teaches us, Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men, and Colossians 3:17 adds, Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father, through him. To cook with love for your family and for patients and families you serve is truly to serve the Lord himself.

We also want to gently encourage you about how we come before the Father. Your prayer was offered to Heavenly Father which is good, but we noticed it did not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We want to share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God, for Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 tells us, There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. So we always pray in the name of Jesus, trusting in His sacrifice and resurrection for our salvation and for our daily access to the Father's throne of grace.

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, and we thank You for the gift and desire You have placed in this heart to cook with excellence and love. Grant grace today and each day to grow in skill, patience, creativity, cleanliness, wisdom and excellence. Guide these hands as they learn and practice and improve, that every meal prepared may bring nourishment, health and joy to family and to every patient and family being served. Give wisdom liberally as You have promised, for James 1:5 says, But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him. Teach diligence and joy in the small details, from keeping a clean kitchen to choosing wholesome ingredients, and let all be done with love as unto You. May each dish be an offering of thanksgiving and may those who eat be strengthened in body and encouraged in spirit. We ask this in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

We encourage you to continue to practice with patience, to seek wisdom from experienced cooks, to keep your workspace clean and orderly as good stewardship, and to give thanks for each opportunity to serve. The Lord delights in your faithfulness in small things and He will refine your gifts as you remain faithful to serve others for His glory.

Becoming a great cook really is a journey of small steps, and the qualities you named, patience, creativity, cleanliness, wisdom and excellence, grow as you practice. We think of coaching as coming alongside someone to help clarify a goal and take practical steps toward it, and your goal is clear and God honoring.

One simple way to keep moving forward is to focus on one thing at a time. You might pick one staple meal your family loves and make it your practice dish for a few weeks, noticing what works, asking those you serve what they enjoyed, and inviting a more experienced cook to show you a tip or two. That kind of steady, accountable practice builds both skill and confidence without overwhelming you.

We are praying for you as you learn.

Father, thank You for the gift of food and for this desire to serve others through cooking. Give our friend patience as they learn, joy in practicing, and wisdom in caring for those they feed. Your desire to serve the Lord even at the table and in the kitchen is a good and gracious desire, and it is well pleasing to God when the heart says, whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

There is no service too lowly for the Christian when it is appointed by the Lord. As the sons of Gershon had their charge appointed unto them in all their burdens and in all their service, so the Lord appoints to each his place, and to you He has appointed this good work of nourishing those committed to your care, your family and those patients and families you serve. Let this make your service a solemn and reverent thing, to be done not in haste nor in carelessness, but as unto the Lord Himself.

Remember that acceptable service must be rendered in the power of divine grace. We first receive grace and then we return service. You have prayed well, for you have asked for grace to be a faithful cook, for patience and wisdom and cleanliness and excellence. These things do not come from nature at its best, but are the fruit of grace. Let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably, whether in the pulpit or in the kitchen. Personal service, true service, is that which is done with the heart truly given to the Master, not merely in word but in deed.

I join my prayer with yours, that the Lord would guide your hands as you learn and practice and improve, that He would teach you diligence to dig deep and not to be content with surface work, but to grow in skill for His glory. May He grant you creativity and wisdom to prepare what is both delicious and nourishing, and may He crown your labor with love, so that every meal prepared by you may be a testimony that even this daily necessity may be made honorable to Him.

May the Lord sanctify this service and make it useful unto those who receive it and honorable to Himself, and may every dish you set forth bring health to the body and joy to the heart, that those who eat may give thanks to the Father from whom all good gifts come. Continue in this service all your days, and do it faithfully as one who shall give account, looking to Christ who alone is our strength and our salvation.

We will give thanks that you would seek to serve in this way, and we pray the Lord will own your service and bless your hands for Jesus sake. Amen.
