Chrysostom
Good and Faithful Servant
You long for your parents' salvation, and rightly so, for nothing is more precious than that they should know the Lord. Yet remember the human will is stubborn and given to change; it requires much tending, like a plant that easily turns to evil. Do not grow weary in prayer, for the wisdom of God often works through time and patience. The cross may appear as foolishness to those who trust in worldly wisdom, but it is the very power of God for salvation. Hold fast, then, to simple faith, and let your own life be a witness more eloquent than words. Accusation will harden them; instead, let the lovingkindness of God shine through you. He is the one who takes away sins without our labor; we need only to receive the gift.
As for the snares of the evil one, be sure that God is able to use even the wickedness of men and demons for the fulfillment of His purposes. Satan's intentions are always malicious, but divine wisdom can turn them to our good and His glory. Do not fear these attacks, but commit yourself to Him who judges righteously. The day of judgment is fixed, and Christ has risen as proof. Therefore, repent and stand firm in this hope yourself, and pray that your parents may do the same before that day.
Seek wisdom and protection from God alone, for He wills your salvation and has called you not because of your worthiness but by His own good pleasure. When you ask for a way out of every situation, remember that the path of escape is often not the removal of trials but endurance for the sake of others, that they too may obtain salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. The present afflictions are temporary and bitter, but they prepare an eternal weight of glory. So continue in prayer, loving your parents so dearly that you are willing to suffer for their souls, as Christ suffered for us. This is the wage we owe, not a gift we give. Trust that the God who loosened tongues and opened hardened hearts will act in His time.
