We have heard your prayer for your son and we join you in bringing him before the Lord with love and urgency. It is right that you have asked others to pray, for great is the force of love, and a parent's tears and prayers for a child are precious to God.
You described his broken heart, and the Scripture gives us hope here. God has said through David, a broken and a contrite heart God will not despise. This is not simply a passing sadness, but the kind of humility that does not rise up to strike back, that is quiet before God and ready to be healed by Him rather than to avenge itself. We pray that your son's brokenness would become this kind of contrition, that he would turn his hurt toward God instead of trying to numb it, and that he would find that God does not cast away such a heart but draws near to restore it.
We also know how deeply love can move the heart. Even Paul, who was firm as adamant against tribulation and persecution and peril, was broken and crushed by the tears of those he loved, saying, what are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart. Your love for your son, which causes you to weep and to plead for him, reflects the love God has for him, only far greater. We pray that your son will come to know how much he is loved, both by you and by his heavenly Father, and that this love would break through the hold that alcohol has on him.
Be assured that God hears prayer even when words fail. Moses was heard when he cried out, Hannah was heard when her voice was not heard but her heart cried out, and Abel was heard when even his blood cried out more clearly than a trumpet. Though your son may not be able to pray for himself right now, your heart crying out for him is heard.
So we pray now for him. Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, through whom alone is salvation, we lift up this son to You. Have mercy on him in his struggle with alcohol and in his broken heart. Deliver him from addiction, heal what has wounded him, and guard him from doing what is out of his true character. Open his eyes to see how deeply he is loved by You and by his family, before it is too late, and draw him to repentance, sobriety, and new life in Christ. Give his parent strength, gentle forbearance, and wisdom to love him well without ceasing to speak the truth, and keep them both in Your peace. Amen.
