We are deeply grieved to hear of the loss of your best friend’s grandmother. The pain of losing a loved one is profound, and we stand with you both in this time of sorrow. The Bible reminds us in Psalm 34:18, "The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit." We trust that God’s comfort will surround your friend as he mourns this loss.

We also lift up the grandmother’s soul, asking the Lord to welcome her into His eternal rest. Jesus said in John 14:1-3, "Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many homes. If it weren’t so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you." We pray that her faith in Christ brought her into the presence of the Savior, where there is no more pain, sorrow, or death.

It is important to remember that our hope in times of loss is found only in Jesus Christ. If your friend or his family does not know the Lord, we encourage them to seek Him, for He alone is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). Salvation comes through no other name, and it is only by trusting in Jesus that we can have eternal life (Acts 4:12). If they have not placed their faith in Him, now is the time to turn to the One who conquered death and offers everlasting comfort.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up our brother who is grieving the loss of his grandmother. Lord, we ask that You wrap Your arms of comfort around him, filling the void left by her absence with Your perfect peace. Remind him that You are close to the brokenhearted and that You collect every tear (Psalm 56:8). Strengthen his faith as he walks through this valley of sorrow, and help him to lean on You, the God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

We also pray for the grandmother’s soul, Lord. If she knew You as her Savior, we thank You for welcoming her into Your eternal kingdom. If she did not, we ask that You would extend Your mercy and grace to her family, drawing them to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. May this loss be a catalyst for them to seek the truth and find salvation in Your Son.

Father, we ask that You would surround this family with Your love and the support of Your people. Give them the strength to face each day, and help them to find hope in the promise of resurrection and eternal life through Jesus Christ. May they cling to Your Word, which says, "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted" (Matthew 5:4).

In the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

We encourage your friend to seek solace in Scripture and in the fellowship of believers during this time. The body of Christ is called to bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2), and we are here to support him in any way we can. May the Lord grant him peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7) as he navigates this season of grief.

We're so sorry about your boyfriend's grandmother. Losing someone who's been part of his life and story is a real blow, and it's good you're reaching out for him right now.

Early grief doesn't need fixing, and he doesn't need polished words. What helps him most in these first days is knowing people are simply with him in it. A Swedish proverb captures this well: "Shared joy is double joy and shared sorrow is half-sorrow." There's genuine relief when someone else carries part of the weight, even if only by being present and not turning away from his sadness.

One of the quiet gifts you can offer is permission, permission to be sad, to not have it together, to talk about her, to laugh at a memory and then cry again without apology. If you're with him, don't rush to fill silences or steer him toward feeling better. Letting him lead, and just staying near, communicates more than any advice ever could. In the weeks ahead, simple, concrete kindness matters: showing up with a meal, handling a small errand, checking in without pressure. Those ordinary acts anchor someone when everything feels unsettled.

We'll be praying for him, and for you as you walk alongside him.

Lord, in this heavy loss we ask You to draw near to this man and wrap him in Your comfort. Give him space to grieve honestly, and sustain him hour by hour through the coming days. Surround him with friends who will simply be there, and let him sense Your steady presence holding him up when he feels most fragile. In Jesus' name, amen.

Comfort ye, comfort ye, one with a tearful eye. The command rings out still, and we must obey it, bearing the balm of Gilead to the wounded spirit. Your friend walks now through the valley of the shadow, and the aching heart needs that peculiar comfort which can press to the bosom and say, "This is my comfort in my affliction." Point him not to mere words of human sympathy, but to the living Word. For it is not the letter, but the Spirit which is our real comfort; when He quickens us, then are we comforted indeed. Pray that the Word would quicken him, that in this dark hour he might find his soul revived by the breath of God, for the external comfort of the Christian is the Word of God, and the internal is its quickening power.

Yet remember, comfort by itself is not enough. Let your prayers seek not only consolation but also constancy, that he might be established in every good word and work even while sorrow lingers. The lack of comfort is an evil thing which may lead to loss of perseverance, so plead that the Lord Himself, even our Lord Jesus Christ and God our Father, would both comfort his heart and establish him. And remind his soul that time, under God's gracious hand, is a wonderful healer. The misery that now seems a crushing disaster shall, by the lapse of time and the surer promise of future mercy, be remembered only as waters that pass away. You shall forget your misery, and remember it as waters that pass away, such is the Divine message for the child of God in affliction.

Lastly, let him not look within too much, for the bruised reed He will not break, and the smoking flax He will not quench. Jesus died to redeem just such souls, and He is faithful, who will not suffer him to be tempted above that he is able. Therefore, comfort one another with these words, for the dead in Christ shall rise first, and we shall ever be with the Lord. That is a solid hope for the bereaved, the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.

The loss of a grandmother pierces the heart, for death remains a fierce enemy even to those who hope in the resurrection. You see, our Lord Jesus Christ himself wept at the tomb of his friend Lazarus, not from weakness, but to show that grief is no stranger to love. Yet he did not stop at tears; he called the dead to life, teaching us that for believers, death is a departure to the Father. Tell your friend to take this sorrow and plunge into the Gospels and the epistles as into a chest full of medicines. There he will find the promise of life in Christ Jesus, a hope that does not rot with the body, an unfading crown kept safe beyond all peril. I will lift him up in prayer, that the Holy Spirit may fortify his mind against despair, and that he may cling to the saving doctrine planted in his soul, despising death even as his grandmother, we trust, has now entered into unending joy. Keep him near the scriptures; no human word can steady the sinking heart like those divine oracles.

Grief touches deep places in the heart, and that ache of loss is something our Lord knows firsthand. He walked this earth as a man of sorrows, thoroughly familiar with grief. He bore our wounds and carried the full weight of human sorrow upon Himself, not as a distant observer but as one who truly understands what it means to weep at a graveside.

When someone we love is taken from us, it’s easy to feel at a loss, spiritually and emotionally, like everything we thought was solid has been shaken. The apostle Paul knew what it meant to lose things he once treasured, even high standing and reputation. Yet he came to see that nothing compares to the surpassing worth of knowing Jesus Christ. In seasons like this, that truth becomes an anchor. The pain is real, and the sorrow can feel overwhelming, but leaning into the knowledge of Christ, who He is and what He has done, begins to shift our perspective from what we’ve lost to what we forever have in Him.

Hold onto this hope: a day is coming when every tear will be wiped away. In the presence of Jesus, there will be no more need for comfort, no more exhortation to trust, no more trials to endure. All our sorrows will be swallowed up in His presence, and what once broke our hearts will be a memory redeemed by His nearness. Until then, the Spirit uses words of truth to build us up, to strengthen our souls, and to bring real comfort right into the middle of our pain.

Be assured of prayers for your friend. Speak gently to him of these things when the time is right, and let your own care be a reflection of the comfort you yourself have received from the Lord. The works done in love and the simple act of showing up in someone’s hurt may seem small now, but they carry eternal weight. God sees the motivations of every heart, and He promises that nothing done in genuine love for others and for Him will be forgotten. Loss here may feel final, but salvation is a gift that death cannot undo, and those who belong to Jesus are safe in His keeping forever.
