Silas
Faithful Servant
I hear the battle in your words, and I want to remind you of something that may feel distant right now but is the solid ground beneath your feet. That misery you feel, that hatred of the meanness and the dark thoughts you find yourself fighting, that is not a sign that God has abandoned you. It is the evidence that you are alive. Your spirit, the real you made new in Christ, wants to please God, and it recoils when the flesh gives in. So do not mistake the struggle for defeat. The old life that was dominated by bitterness and anger was crucified with Christ. That old man is dead. You have been reconciled to God through the death of His Son, and now you are living a new life in the resurrected Lord. The provision has been made. The tree of life is offered to you in the cross.
The fight you are describing is the reality of having a choice. You are standing exactly where the truth declares you are: free. You are no longer a servant to sin, forced to obey its impulse. You can yield the members of your body as instruments of unrighteousness, or you can yield yourself to God as someone who has been brought from death to life. The feeling of being overpowered comes when we forget that the capacity to do God’s will doesn’t originate from our own grit. It is God who is at work in you, both to give you the desire to fight and the power to walk in the Spirit. When that mean thought rises, you have a split second to reckon it dead and to yield your mind to God for His purposes instead. Your mind is a gateway. Instead of trying to fight the thought in your own strength, which is what leaves you feeling "off" and depressed, turn immediately and offer your mind to Him. Ask Him to fill it with the reality that His life is in you right now.
When you feel like a failure, you can come to God with the simple truth: you yielded to the flesh you hate, and you need help. He is not waiting to crush you for stepping onto that old path. He is waiting to remind you that He has given you eternal life, and that life is in His Son. Having the Son, you have everything required to live a holy life. That life is not a distant reward for perfect performance; it is the river flowing from the throne of God right into your present condition. The emptiness and the emotional cruelty you’re feeling are the ripples of walking after the flesh, but they are not your identity. You were not created to live for your own pleasure or to be ruled by your own shifting feelings. You were created to bring God pleasure, and your life will only find its rich fulfillment when, right in the middle of the chaos, you make the conscious decision to please Him. The choice is life and death. Choose to yield your body and your racing mind to righteousness, and watch the fruit begin to push out the darkness, not by your effort, but by the life of the One who is making intercession for you right now.
